Looks like they have taken different roads to get to the same place.

eDRAM is fast but if the 32mb is correct in this HD age with large discs and drives it will never achieve it's full benefits. I'm not exactly sure how you would use such a small space.

Well my friend's son went to DigiPen..... the videogame college in Redmond, Washington. The son didn't go into the industry. His fiance freaked out over the whole EA Spouse open letter that described tons of basically forced overtime and insisted it's her or your job in the industry. She said she didn't want to become a "tech widow". He chose her and became a mortgage market analyst just as the housing market crashed. He's still cracking at it, but he ditched the fiance a few years later.

Anyways... his friends and roommates from college did go into the industry and they keep in touch. One of them works at Activision and Skyped him from GDC. He did say the memory thing was discussed with devs there.

Here's the crazy thing.... His friend would discuss the memory thing Sony talked about, but wouldn't actually confirm nor deny to us that EDRAM even existed in the Xbox 720 due to NDA. When the PS3 and Xbox 360 were coming out, he'd give us little tidbits he wasn't supposed to tell us. Not anymore.

He said they are far more proactive then last gen when it comes to us sticking to NDAs and avoiding leaks. They monitor your Facebook, Twitter, forums and other social media accounts of yours to make sure you ain't blabbing the goods. It's made him mega-paranoid. He wants to keep his job in an industry where you are lucky to have a job right now. Just ask the Deep Space devs about job security.

So his friend tells us he'll discuss the Xbox 720 all day long ONCE Microsoft has spilled the beans themselves. He won't even give us hints.

"There are many, but four of them are representative." They are (1) a structure that realizes high-speed data transmission between the CPU and GPU, (2) a structure that reduces the number of times that data is written back from the cache memory in the GPU, (3) a structure that enables to set priorities in multiple layers in regard to arithmetic and graphics processing and (4) a function to make the CPU take over the preprocessing to be conducted by the GPU.

I am curious on how they are going to fit all those chips onto the motherboard without making it oversized! You have to remember that GDDR5 puts off some nice heat as well...maybe the PS4 will just be one big fan!

Scratchpad, it's never meant to be a memory to hold anything for a very long time.

All rumors also point toward more flexible arrangement when compared to x360 edram.
This time it's read write buffer with and GPU can bypass it completely if one wants. (there should be plenty of cases when you want to write elsewhere and use edram as source.. etc.)
