Mine lasted 3 years too...but I think it messed up because I had opened it up and put arctic silver on it lol...later on realized you're not supposed to. So not sure how long it was going to last.

I'm positive the new one will last longer. But I will not open it up this time around.

This thread made me smile and I just had to join the forum to share the life of my PS3.
My PS3 is a first release fat boy and I have never had a problem with it. I have vacuumed the air intakes a few times but no serious maintenance. These things were built to last. Mine was thrown out the window and literally kicked around a car park by my crazy ex. It was torture to witness but we both made it through (me and the ps3, not the ex) . Missing front fascia, bits snapped off, top cover broke off but glued back on, hdd cover missing, front of blue ray player is exposed, various other scuffs and scratches and still works like a dream. The only thing that doesn't work is the red led when in standby.
I will be destroyed if my playstation ever dies, may have to get it stuffed and mounted if it does.

I bought my original PS3 at launch and it YYOL'd in Septembet 2010. no complaints there. In October 2010 I bought the slim and it's been working flawlessly ever since that day. of Course I can't really tell if it will last as long as the original, but there's nothing about it that makes me think it wont...

Well, I have had my 120GB slim since Jul 2010. My fatty died after around 3/4 years of use. I used both units almost daily. The slim seems to hold up pretty good IMHO

Haha better love story than Twilight My fat lasted two years, like i said, but i have two brothers that also use the same console, well they used to anyway, now one doesnt play at all and the other hardly plays, maybe that will increase its life span...

Im such a newb, i was talking to both barrelz lol

anyway i guess the console making a bit of a noise doesnt mean its gonna break soon, i just want it to last until the release of the ps4, i dont mind what happens after!

fat ps3 is very vulnerable to heat. no matter what people say about take care of it.... it will still fail. fat ps3 is 80% fault of the unit tech and 20% of owners care.

slim on the other hand is very durable.

Mine has lasted a lot of use lol. This one has only been here for 1.5 years though. Goodness. I thought it was longer than that. It doesn't seem to have any problems so far. My 40GB fat is still running just fine too. It's been used A TON for over five years now.

Fats are only susceptible to heat death if you work them too hard. The first time My fat died was 3 years into it'd life when I got Mass Effect 2 and played it for like 8 hours a day, almost everday for a month. Before that I hadn't played any game on the system that hard, plus there was a possible air flow problem which may have let heat build up around it. There are a lot of potential reasons why a system can die but they all stem from not taking care of it in a reasonable fashion.

My 40GB died last year and I had it since 2008. I recently got 250GB PS3 Super Slim and it's working good. Just depends on how well you take care of it. My old one got the red light from overheating.

My og Slim with 120gb HDD is still kicking, now with 750gb HDD naturally. Only issue so far is it struggles loading Disney Blu-Rays. My 60 games load fine.

My launch 20gb just died yesterday. I'm happy it lasted this long but disappointed because now I can't finish gow ascension and maybe last of us. I contacted Sony tech support and they will do a trade in for a 160gb for 99 USD. I don't know what's the best thing to do? I don't have a lot to throw down right now. Also, it doesn't help that gow is stuck in the drive. Damn..
