So I never did play Bioshock 1 or 2. I tried the Bioshock 1 demo years ago, and it didn't seem to click with me. For whatever reason the buzz around this game got my hype up and I decided to pick it up.
I am, from what I can tell, 4 stages (areas? segments?) away from being finished the game and its becoming a real chore for me to complete it.

If its a chore then stop playing. Why would you play a game you aren't enjoying? I played 1 but never finished. I started 2 a while ago but rushed through the first bit too fast and didn't enjoy it. I'll go back when I'm ready and start from the beginning.
Why push through to the end of a game you don't like? Lol makes no sense.

The story is finally turning into something that I've come far enough to want to see how it ends. It's the gameplay mechanics that are becoming tiresome.

I think I'm about 75% done and I'm not crazy about it either. The setting is great of course, but yes, the gameplay has become a bit too repetitive, which was the main flaw with the original BioShock as well.
As others have said, I think this series would work better without so much shooting. I always felt the shooting was out of place in these games. Although I'm sure this series wouldn't be as popular without it.
Still a good game overall though and I'm interested to see how it ends.

I have to disagree. The zip-line mechanic, combined with the different Vigors and a variety of different weapons makes for a lot of variation in combat if you're willing to try new things and die a few times. I can see where you're all coming from, of course, as it is easy to slip into using the same weapons and tactics throughout the entire game.
If you're willing to be creative, though, there can be plenty of variation.SchaffinOSX

There are many great aspects about it. The sky line was one of the best parts to me. I will say though game play wise I think I enjoyed Bioshock 1 more. Story wise once I understood all the story it was one of the greatest masterpieces of gaming history.

The setting, characters, and story are so well done that the gameplay actually falls as its weakest strength, in my opinion. Not that the gameplay is bad, and in fact some elements like the skyhooks are awesome. But overall it feels like the shooting and gameplay is almost for a lesser or more generic game, not one that's weaving this fantastic narrative and world.

I really enjoyed combat. The vigors are great and allow you to get pretty creative hen combined with the different weapons. My only gripe with the game is the save system really. I hate not being able to save when I want.

I enjoyed the gameplay a lot, something I can't say for the first Bioshock. Although I did start on Hard, my 2nd normal playthrough was too easy and pretty boring. I'm just going to start on hard from now on.

I'm about halfway through the game and I'm enjoying it but not as much as i enjoyed 1 and 2. I really like the story and the skyhook mechanic but something just isn't clicking with me as the others did.
I can read your thoughts.

The shooting gameplay has never been great in Bioshock games but I do feel they improved that in Infinite. It's just not what makes the games great, rather the setting, the story, the atmosphere, the RPG mechanics too. I agree that there's too much shooting, I feel exactly the same way about Uncharted as well.
95 on metacritic is a bit much IMO. Infinite is great but BioShock was better.

I can say that I look upon Bioshock Infinite differently than I would most video games. I look at it as a type of art, a story, not so much as a gameplay experience. Like I said, I do think the gameplay is awesome, but I agree with others that it's strength comes in the immersive story and character development.
Even if you conclude that the gameplay is average, I think Bioshock Infinite is an excellent experience.SchaffinOSX

I didnt like it.
Good game but they took out everything i liked about Bioshock 1 so it wasnt a Bioshock game for me. Near the end it tries too hard to mindfuck you and the gunplay was way too shootery and not like bioshock.

I also think Bioshock Infinite is overrated. The first Bioshock had more of an effect on me because it was new and refreshing. Bioshock Infinite feels kind of old and like iv'e done this before, if that makes sense. I would give Bioshock Infinite an 8-8.5 and the first Bioshock 9-9.5.
I haven't got to the end yet, but I agree with you that it tries to be to much of a shooter. The first Bioshock had a better atmosphere and just felt like an original unique game.Last edited by DarkVincent07; 04-12-2013 at 12:17. Reason: double post

You guys need to stop comparing it to Bioshock 1. This is a completely different game with similar elements. Bioshock was too much like the first one, and it ended up not being nearly as good. It was certainly time to change it up, and I think Infinite was just as great as the original.
I hated this game so much that I beat 2 times in a row!!

I think this was the biggest let down for me overall. It wasn't as dark as the first 2. I also agree with what Lethal says though. This is a much different experience than the first two for sure. Which honestly is something that you strive for when making sequels. It has so many unique elements just like Bioshock 1 had. I think I liked the vibe of the first one more though. The Big Daddy is still one of my favorite game characters of all time. (That is if you want to call him a character.)

It has Bioshock in the title so its not allowed to be completely different with similar elements. If Bioshock is in the title i will compare it to other Bioshock games. If i see Mario in the title i will compare it all the other Mario games. They could of kept its unique gunplay and creepiness and still gone with this new idea. What they should have done is call it something different and just say its a spiritual successor to Bioshock with similar elements. All this says to me is that they made it "enough" like Bioshock to slap the name on there to get more money.

I loved Bioshock Infinite, myself. Even though I could see why some wouldnt like it.
For me, its the best in the series and I'd easily give it a solid 9.5. In that same respect I'd probably give Bioshock 1 a 8.8, but if it had the gameplay of Bioshock 2 and ended sooner I would probably give it a 9.2.

I'm really enjoying it myself. Its pretty amusing to hear people saying their tired of sequels and developers doing the same old thing but when the developers actually do try to do something different with a series then they whine and cry about how it wasn't like the first one. Unbelievable. lol

I didn't like it either.
The whole gliding/flying/whateveryoucallit doesn't play well in FPS.
I actually liked the original BioShock. Maybe I'm just sick of FPS in general.
