    PS4 and Linux

    Hi Guys,

I've not been around for some time.

Now the PS4 is ramping up, I better get my Game Face on again.

Has anybody heard or seen any reports of Linux being allowed to install, like when the PS3 was launched?

More so than when I bought the PS3 at launch, I would LOVE to see this is an option on the PS4, especially as the specs would see us most likely be able to install a variety of Linux Distros.

Would you like to see this on the PS4?

    Cheers

Would be good, don't think it'll happen after the PS3 fiasco. An PS4 running Ubuntu would be amazing

Yeah, I can pretty much guarantee this won't be happening unless someone hacks the system.

I seriously never understood the uproar over OtherOS being removed from the PS3..seriously why would you want a PC OS on a games console?

Think it's really unlikely. Was surprised PS3 gave the option to be honest

Some people like to mess about with that sort of thing. Who would have thought others like doing what you don't.

The fuss and threat of lawsuits was ridiculous.
The option was there then they removed it, I did mess with Linux but realised it was more trouble than it is worth it was super slow due to the meagre amount of RAMs and no access to the GPU features.

After the PS3 thing, I dont see a console maker letting people add another OS anytime soon.

You sure about that? Then even if it was, doesn't Sony use Android for it's mobile phones?

Because it defeats the purpose of the device and doesn't work properly when added. The whole purpose of a console is to make an easy to use gaming machine that may have a few other basic entertainment options like playing movies. Adding a PC OS suddenly turns it into a complicated device that lacks the options and some of the basic functionality the OS was intended to have.

Adding linux to a console is sort of like adding a trailer hitch to a Smart Car.

I never realised something that would be an option for people to use if they wanted would complicate the system. Don't want Linux, don't install. Maybe i'm just different but I like to get as much use out of my devices as possible.

It certainly complicates things for Sony who have to make allowances in both hardware and software to support it. Not to mention the trouble and cost of providing customer support for people who have problems with it if it is an officially supported feature.

And why would Sony want that?

Well, yeah, it would be a problem for Sony and that is probably why we wont see it. I'm not looking at it from Sony's perspective I'm looking at it from a consumer point view and i don't understand why anyone as a consumer wouldn't want more features in something they are buying.

I would think for Sony to leave an option in there to install Linux would create a higher probability for it to get hacked or messed with in a way they did not intend it to be. There is also additional overhead costs for them to keep something like that on the system, because with each firmware update they have to spend more hours making sure that there are no security holes, etc. I love having different options and more flexibility with anything that I buy, but knowing that it could cause Sony a huge headache down the road and them wanting to focus highly on the gaming aspect of the system I completely understand why they have chosen not to put it in there.

There is only so much the PS4 OS can do. Linux OS could install any number of programs to do practically anything.

Doubt its ever going to happen on PS4 though.

I doubt the PS4 will have Linux after what happened with the PS3.

You know people would bash Sony for it somehow.

meh. Linux on PS4 wouldn't be that interesting IMO. If you were into coding then Linux on PS2 and PS3 was awesome because you got to play with the Emotion Engine and Cell Processor. PS4 is just an x86 box.

Linux is pointless for PS4. Sony better spend their resource on gaming, and better PSN store, as well as web features like youtube.

    PS4 and Linux

I think Sony said everything there was to say with Linux, PS3 and the Cell. They got all the "supercomputer cluster" publicity they could get, and called it a day.

A thought occurred to me during the time after PS3 release. When the EU decided that the PS3 was not a PC, and that it would therefor not receive any tax relief in that area. Maybe that was part of the reason Linux was put into, and ultimately, taken out?

So much noise surrounding linux for PS3.. I the end, could'nt care less.

People try to make the same argument for the PS2 Linux kit.. I don't buy it. It assumes Sony added the other OS functionality without first checking if they would get a tax break or not, which they would have done if the tax break was the only reason for other OS in the first place.
