Microsoft Points to be culled with release of new Xbox console rumor

    I hope this is true.
Microsoft will announce Microsoft Points will be culled with the release of its next Xbox console, according to a report.

The Verge states that sources familiar with the matter said Points will be replaced with a new gift card system, similar to iTunes vouchers.
Regular transactions such as credit and debit cards will also be supported, and the new system will span all of Microsoft systems such as its Windows Store, Phone Store, and Xbox Live.
Rumors have stated for what seems eons now that Microsoft had been planning to revamp or kill of it’s points systems, and The Verge expects the new to be revealed at E3 in June.

I remember hearing about MS supposedly dropping the point system almost a year ago and it never happened. I hate the point system and its set up to make you buy more points than you need.

Good. The point system is bull$#@!. Hopefully we can also buy games for people, like how Steam does it.

There point based systems did have some delayed tax benefits though. If you buy a pure cash equivalent like they are going to change over to then they tax you at the point of consumption (when you buy DLC Microsoft will be adding sales tax.) The prior system taxed you when you bought a point card, so if you bought a card from out of state you weren’t charged sales tax and didn’t have to pay use tax until the end of the year
"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that (developers) want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is, what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?"

Don't matter to me. Point systems works fine on my end. But if they change it to normal dollars, that is cool too.

Awesome. Much easier to work real money.

The main reason why I don't buy stuff on XBL that are purchased with points.

    #IndieStation4 and proud of it.

On PSN you can pay the exact amount for each thing you buy. Can you do that on LIVE? I'm pretty sure you have to buy a set amount of points first.

But then again, I haven't bought anything on LIVE in a while.

Both systems have a $5.00 minimum purchase when you use your debit/credit card, and both can end up with remaining unused balances.

PSN allows you to buy any item $5.00 and over for the exact price. On Xbox, you have to buy points in increments of 400, 800, 1200, 1600 (5,10,15,20) for many of the products for sale. However, you can buy (not rent) movies and full retail Games on Demand games for exact pricing on Xbox.

Nope. And yeah you have to buy a set amount of points first which almost always has you buying more than you need to because of how the pricing and point purchases are set up rather than having just the exact amount that you need. Its total bs.

The $5.00 minimum is true but I have never had to spend over the actual amount of the purchase on PSN. It always just takes the exact amount I need for the purchase unless I manually select a higher amount.

I wonder if I get money for the local point exchange rate. I got my points on the cheap on eBay 40% cheaper.

Smaller purchases are (eg XBLA) you need to use the points system.
Otherwise you can buy them for the dollars.

Ah, lucky you! I still have a remaining balance for some purchases that I have made that were less than $5.00. No big deal to me, one beer is $5 and that is gone in 30 seconds.

Well yeah of course if theres a $5 minimum and you purchase something for under that then theres going to be a leftover balance. But we both know that wasn't what I was talking about.

Don't think how you bought it (if you didn't buy it through the xbox, ie a prepaid card) will matter. You would likely be credited the equivalent amount in the local currency of your account.
