Did you like it or not? Sleeping Dogs

So I just got finished with this game and thought it was time to share thoughts with everyone.

I've never really jumped into the open world sandbox genre all that much (nope, haven't even played a GTA to date). FC3 was my first attempt, and I adored every moment of it. So when I started looking for something else to try, I stumbled onto Sleeping Dogs. Now I am a die hard Asian Action movie buff, absolutely love them. The action, the drama....they seem to be a step above North American action cinema in my opinion. So when I learned that Sleeping Dogs was basically an interactive Hong Kong cop drama, there was no stopping me from trying this game out.

I must say, much to my surprise not only am I still finding a new love for the sandbox genre, I really enjoyed the flare of this game. You play a Hong Kong cop sent to infiltrate the HK triads and bring them down from the inside. During your mission you begin to feel torn between your duty as a police officer and the relationships you begin to develop within the gang you were sent to destroy. You find yourself carrying out unspeakably horrible acts in order to maintain your cover and at the same time must try and keep the mind to that of a cop. The game does such a good job of pulling you from one side to the other that half way through the game I was convinced that if I was given a choice between the two at the end, I was going to stay a triad.

The action sequences were really engaging. Combat started out a tad weak, mashing one button until you could counter attack someone similar to that of Batman:AA. But as the game moves forward you unlock more martial arts to really open up your combat technique. Aside from that you get car chases, boat chases, foot chases. Shooting from vehicles. Jumping from vehicle to vehicle. Fleeing the cops. Slow-mo bullet time events. And environmental kills where you can even the odds by smashing someones face into a table saw.

As a hardcore fan of Asian cinema, this game had it all for me. So my question to you is....Did you like it or not?

I think this game is fantastic. Excellent narrative, great vehicle handling, wonderful characters, and the emphasis on hand-to-hand combat worked fantastically.

I really hope this isn't the last we see of Wei Shen, or at the very least, Hong Kong.

Personally, i loved it. The impression i got, when i first started playing it was that it felt much more `alive` than other similar games..eg. Gta.

The game was going to be more massive, have more fighting options, have more to do, everything was going to be interactive, etc. but square toned down everything and made it simpler so they wouldn't waste a lot on a new title that might flop and to focus on making the gameplay as good as possible. According to them they didn't reach expected sells even tho it's over 2million

I put over 100 hours into the PC version. I loved Bully on the PS2 and having the same lead designer, Mike Skupa, work on Sleeping Dogs made it feel like a spiritual successor. Both titles have an addictive melee combat system where you can learn new moves and the maps are designed to not feel quite as open.

Yea square must have some weird expectations on their titles. They said the same for Tomb Raider. Odd company. If your game breaks a million copies sold you should be jumping for joy.

The problem is that these big publishers spend way too much on marketing (and in the case of Sleeping Dogs, way too much on Tom Wilkinson, Emma Stone, and Lucy Liu, when they could've been replaced by any no-name given their limited presence in the game), and the only way to make a sizable profit is if the game sells Call of Duty numbers. Not every game can become the phenomenon that Call of Duty is, so not every game should carry the same economic expectations (or the same budget). So while Sleeping Dogs sold great numbers, it wasn't enough given how much it cost to put on the market.

I played GTA4 for the first time last week and while I do think it's a very fun game, Sleeping Dogs is leagues ahead of it in terms of storytelling and gameplay (combat, driving, etc.).

I think Sleeping Dogs is more comparable to Bully than GTA IV.

Like I said, both titles focus more on the melee combat system as you learn new moves and use parts of the environment to take down your opponent. The maps are also designed similarly. It's an open world environment but with parts that are linear/closed-off to the player.

Great game, easy plat, fun story, fun things to do. Still not better than True Crime Streets of LA, but very close to it and a lot better than GTAIV.

I would normally tend to agree but she can't be cheap, and her character is in the game for two missions. If you're gonna spend the money to hire an A-lister like her, you've gotta at least have a substantial role for her.

Enjoyed it better than GTA4 and on par with Saints Row 3. Felt like mixing True Crimes with Shenmue and GTA in the mix. If a sequel gets made, i am buying it.
