Xbox One has non-replaceable hard drive, external storage is supported

We had the opportunity to chat with Albert Penello, senior director of product planning at Microsoft this afternoon, who was kind enough to clarify a few topics for us regarding the recently-unveiled Xbox One. One thing we were quick to ask about was the integrated storage. 500GB sounds like a lot today -- but so did the 20GB unit in the original Xbox 360. The HDD there was, at least, replaceable. Can you do the same with its successor? Sadly, no. Hard drives in the Xbox One are non-user-serviceable, but Penello confirmed that the USB 3.0 port is there for external storage, which can be used for everything the internal storage can be used for. That includes game installs and downloads. So, don't fret: adding storage will be just as easy as ever.

Well wouldn't this be similar to Sony's plus service I'm assuming you would upload all of your movies games saves into a cloud server but once you don't have live you cant access it unless you still have it on your hdd. Which will be filled with games i dont think this is a real issue.
"I think all those developers who are saying, "We donít want to do a PS3 game," or "Itís really difficult to do it," should shut up and make their games. If you have time to complain about it, then you should be spending your time working on getting the most from the hardware."

The issue is that it is inconvenient to have to use an EHDD especially if you fill up the IHDD and have to do all of that switching and connecting. It's not like a PC where the EHDD stays put as the PC will not be moved. Plus not all of us want to use the cloud as I personally will not use it and don't use it now to store data. Sony is not forcing anyone to use the cloud service and it is optional for game/media storage.

I assume their naming of the console 'One' was to say that it's just one device that does many things. But now we know it consists of around four things. Console, power brick, Kinect and external HDD (which I assume most will have if they need to be installed). Infinity sounds so much better.

With our TiVo I hated not being able to simply put in a bigger HDD, instead having to have an extra device and cables (USB and I believe power) to clutter everything up.

Any restrictions on using the external HDD?

Still a bit of a weird decision. Sony really hasn't said much on how they plan on handling this issue right so they could be worse or have something similar.

Being able to upgrade would have been nice on top of the functionality to connect an external HDD (hope Sony has this too.)

That's not entirely bad. Now people who don't like screwdrivers can just plug any external HDD and extend storage.

The key point is that external storage can be used for anything the internal HDD can. Which is a good thing.

Will this one restrict game/saves etc to a certain amount (like the 360)?

Wouldn't see why it should considering how locked down it is anyway. Would be cool to use it as storage.

I really can't believe they had several VIPs on stage and couldn't make this stuff clear. It's all MSes fault. They wanted to blow smoke up everyone's ass and actually reveal their console through press releases afterward. It was, quite very literally, the opposite of the PS4 reveal.

All they had to do was a introduce it
to us, give us the facts and sell the message that we want this thing.
    What we got was...ummm

If there was a message in that reveal it was "we don't know how to sell this to you"

Reason why they had to postpone a month?
The HDD news is probably the best news so far. I'd rather use external HDDs, providing they can be fully utilized, than install, delete, re-install games, apps etc pattern that would occur with any size HDD you could replace the 500gb (good size) with anyway.

Oh there was some good things, apparently the controller and the trigger rumble is awesome. But really TV should have been a small section gloss over it then give us some really nitty gritty tech specs.

And for $#@!s sake you don't show of your new hardware with a multiplatform game we all know is going to be the exact same on either console.

So i can not remove my PORN after i stream it and place it my magazine cupboard... This sucks

But this really does suck, the one thing i really liked about this gen, is the fact i could take out the HDD's on both consoles and replace them
