Microsoft: "we're committed to Japan" with Xbox One

    http://www.oxm.co.uk/54629/microsoft...with-xbox-one/

Xbox 360 may have struggled to hit the bigtime in Japan, but Microsoft won't take the opportunity to retreat and focus on other territories with Xbox One.
"We're committed to Japan," the company's Don Mattrick told OXM and other journalists during a roundtable chat at its manufacturing labs, a couple of weeks before this Tuesday's Xbox One reveal. "We continue to build on our partnerships, we continue to build on our offerings for consumers inside of that space.
"We think it's an important market," he added. "And we'll continue building on the working investment that we've done over all these years." Any chance of another Lost Odyssey, Mattrick? Pushed for more, the exec refused to be, erm, pushed. "Again, I'm not going to go in to details of the launch until we nuance with key partners and build a market strategy.
"This event is just to, kind of, kick off the big picture - there'll be more news in appropriate ways [for each geographical region], including the content partners, all classes of content, what's been tweaked and what's the same as what we're rolling out in the US."
This is the same Don Mattrick who recently asked whether people really want an Xbox that ignores the web, by the way.
Read our definitive Xbox One guide for more on the new console and Microsoft's vision for next gen. It's all based on that sweet, sweet pre-reveal access.

They will offer their products in, Japan but I don't think that Microsoft will aggressively tackle it like they did this generation.

X-Bone has no chance in Japan.

Japan is a very mobile country now and the PS4 seems to be more about mobility, whereas X-Bone seems to be more about the living room.

Microsoft would need some huge Japanese exclusives.

Didn't MS have some exclusive games in japan with the 360 and yet they made no impact? Nothing is going to change.

Yep. Most of those exclusives they got (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia(timed)) all sold more copies (3-5 times more in many cases) outside of Japan then in Japan. it was why they stopped focusing on them because they only did it to try to capture the Japan market and they where not falling for it. Sad because those games actually sold well but not up to MS sell 3 million or more or no sequel for you frame of mind.
They are committed, but Japan is bottom of the list.

will the Japanese buy a console the size of Xbone that will not provide the media content the USA will have for a stupidly high price when they would not buy 360?

    not a chance i'd say.

Well they likely already have a windows computer. Also a windows/hotmail/outlook account. And the smartglass app is available on multiple phone/tablet OS's.

So I do think you are underestimating the number of people that could make use of such a connected experience.

Well considering their TV services don't reach outside of the US, doesn't look like they are too committed to me. No way they are going to try and tackle it hard like with they did with the 360. Honestly don't blame them though. Japan showed they had no interest in the xbox. Why would they change now?

I thought they had a commitment with the TV with XBox One.. Microsoft has a real problem with infidelity.

Windows computer, yeah. Hotmail account? No. Most Japanese people have email through their cellphone companies, like Softbank or Docomo, and the ones that want more anonymous accounts are generally on Yahoo or Gmail, just like most of the world.

Also, who the hell uses Outlook (not express) at home? That is a business app, and would have no bearing on who buys a GAMING CONSOLE. Also, even if you were only talking about Outlook express, it's pretty freaking rare for anyone to have a dedicated mail program for home use, anyhow.

TV services will not reach outside the USA at launch. That doesn't mean that is cannot or will not expand outside the USA as time goes by.

Supposedly Japanese have not interest in non Japanese products. Yet, for example Apple seems to be doing well enough there. There is no reason that with the right product/services any company cannot succeed in Japan.

Apparently you are unaware that Microsoft has made all hotmail accounts into outlook (not the email client) accounts.

The question is why would Japan buy an X-Bone over a PS4? Even if X-Bone has just as much mobile capability, X-Bone's main strength is its 'living room hub' abilities, which I don't think Japan would be interested in.

PS4 will have the games they want and it will provide mobile capabilities.

The only way Japan will be interested in X-Bone is if Microsoft secures Dragon Quest XI as an exclusive.

The question isn't why a Japanese person would buy an X1 over a PS4, it is why wouldn't they buy an X1 period? (say in addition to a PS4). It doesn't necessarily have to be for the games, if the non gaming capabilities generate enough interest.

I guess that's what it comes down to. Do you personally think Japan will be interested in X-Bone's all-in-one abilities?

Even the PS4 is gonna have a hard time IMO unless Sony have a lot more JRPGs than PS3. They need to get Japan Studio back to where they were 15 years ago. MS has no chance and Nintendo are also struggling. Portables are the future and it seems they've taken over sooner than anyone expected in Japan.

If they offer enough that caters to the Japanese market, yes.

But they are going up against Sony on their home turf. Sony is a beloved brand over there. Apple products are a rare thing for Japanese to be big adopters of a US product. They tend to stay at home with all their electronic purchases. Not saying it can't happen but 360 was a huge failure there. I don't see that changing with XBone.
