Microsoft targets 25 million more Xbox 360 sales, 'huge announcement' planned for E3.

Microsoft believes it can sell 25 million more Xbox 360s despite announcing the console's successor, the Xbox One, earlier this week. The Xbox 360 launched back in 2005, and has sold an estimated 77.2 million to date. Growth has slowed significantly in recent months (despite the console outselling the PS3 in the US for over two years straight), and it only sold 1.3 million last quarter. Speaking to the UK's Official Xbox Magazine, Interactive Entertainment Business Senior VP Yusuf Mehdi said that Microsoft is aiming to sell the additional consoles over the next five years.
To achieve that lofty goal, Microsoft will have to ensure a sales average of 1.25 million per quarter for half a decade. How does it plan to do that? Mehdi notes that a large number of those sales will "probably come from replacements," but Microsoft is also planning a "huge announcement" related to the Xbox 360 for E3 to reinvigorate the aging console. We recently confirmed that a dashboard refresh is coming to the console in the next few months. Although we haven't heard any details other than to expect a "visual refresh," it's likely that Microsoft will update the interface look more like the new Xbox One UI, just as it did for older smartphones when transitioning from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8. It's also possible that Microsoft could be planning on refreshing its console, or reworking the subsidized pricing strategy it introduced last year.

new shape 360 it is then?

The GiantBombCast they talked about this a bit. Evidently some folks found Linkin profiles of IBM hardware engineers listing that they had created an Xbox 360 system on a chip. In other words, a super duper slim console with extremely tiny power usage and it's rumored to be $99.

If it has an optical drive I'll be getting at least one at that price.

At $99 it's way better than a Roku, Apple or Google TV.

Dare I say it, if it was dirt cheap; I'd consider it to play through Tales of Vesperia and a few other titles.

I'll keep an eye out for E3. Could be the last Microsoft console I own, Lol.

Too bad MS didn't cut the price. Xbox360 is certainly not worth the 299 price this late in its life;imo of course. There's no exclusives. This year is bone dry lol. Doesn't give me much faith in MS to keep the exclusive support up for xbone. One hand washes the other when building up trust with your customers. MS did talk about continued support for the 360 but I don't recall anything worth remembering coming out of e3 announcements.

It should be easy for Microsoft to do this given the popularity of the Xbox 360. I don't like the redesigned Xbox 360 however. The original Xbox Slim was just way more awesome.

Not for $299 it wont and the 4GB for $199 is just out of the question since the HDD is way too small. With no Blu Ray the 360 should be priced at $150-$200 for the 250 GB. Kinect of course would be extra.

On my Xbox 360 for 2013, I will be seeing plenty of exclusives. For ME I will be getting:

    State of Decay
    Gears of War Judgement
    Dead Fall Adventures
    Ascend
    Dark
    World of Tanks
    Titanfall

And that is off the top of my head. Looking forward to more games being announced as MS has stated too.

If the Xbox 360 wasn't selling well at this price, then they would have lowered it by now. The console is obviously selling well and no less is expected of such a successful and popular console.

Yup. If the Xbox 360 needs a price cut, MS will cut the price. They know their sales and projections better than any of us. Not that any of us care. We already own the console, and we are already moving on to the next gen. They can make it $10,000.00 for all I care.

At this point anyone who pays $299 for 360 is pretty much a fool. There are so many places to buy them second hand for 1/2 that price and there is a big price cut around the corner when the One drops. Sales for both consoles are going to start to drop as people gear up for November.

Hell, for $300 I can get a 250 gb slim with 10+ games on eBay.

It doesn't matter if people are fools for buying the 360 at any given price point. The fact of the matter is that people are indeed buying lots of Xbox 360s, making 25 million more console sales a very big possibility.

You're right. There are a lot of fools out there.

However, I expect 2/3 of those 25 million will be sold once the One is released and the big price cut comes.

    that 25m projection isn't for the $299 360s.
