Don Mattrick Defends Xbox One's Online Requirement

    Source

Don Mattrick, president of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, told me that the decision to require internet for the Xbox One was driven by a desire to create a console unleashed from the technical limitations of today's not-entirely-connected society. Microsoft had a decision to make, he said; either create a console planted in the present or look to the future and create a device built on the concept that one day the internet will be as available as electricity or telephone service.

"Gamers want the best experiences possible and they want a future-proof system," he told Polygon.

    .....

"Now, with Xbox One, we're stretching the canvas again so creators can design for the cloud with every game they make," he said. "In the next decade, every great game will tap the power of the cloud to deliver richer, more immersive worlds. We have a great offline game system in Xbox 360 that gets better when it's connected. We could have made another offline console, but then offline would have been the lowest common denominator design point for developers. We chose to take the progressive path."

Polishing $#@! and trying to sell it to me as gold. Just a means to justify their drm bull$#@!. I still want to see the games at E3 but ultimately...

    Of course he would.

Between now and release though I think they might change their mind and realize what a big mistake this is.

The last thing i will do is cut off my internet service, so i really don't have a problem with being connected all the time.

But what if you're in the Middle of a game & your connection drops (which can happen) ??

My only problem with this is, they really think we are stupid, and out of touch. No matter what kind of PR spin they put on this, it is all about DRM! There is no other explanation. But, Don Mattrick would lose his job if he said otherwise. I have no problem with any of the console manufacturers trying to take a bite out of the used game market, if it brings down prices and frees up cash for developers to create new and exciting games. But, take away my ability to play a single player game unless I am connected to the internet, then I can't support your console. That is the bottom line, so deal with it.

I don't really have an issue with the online requirement as I'll always have internet, and even if it cuts out I won't be sweating over it. There's more to life than sitting on an Xbox all day.

As far as the DRM, it will supposedly check about once every 24 hours, so that wouldn't be a problem if your service suddenly went down for a few minutes.

The bigger question for me is if a game uses the cloud in a big way, what would happen if your internet went down?

Either way, since i switched to U-verse a few years ago ive had a fast reliable online experience.

I am curious about how it will all work, so i hope to hear some solid answers at E3.

Always online is such a mistake. Not everyone has internet and others don't have a good connection. And it's not like it's only the once ever 24 hour check. The games that use the cloud computing, can they be played offline? Is it only multiplayer that is going to use that feature? So many specifics need to be addressed and hopefully by E3, it'll all be answered.

Just more bs from MS PR to justify their DRM and also to continue charging people to play their games online when its free on every other platform. No thanks.

    Cloud this cloud that.

I'd like to do some maths here but I don't know what numbers to work with so maybe someone can help. I can see it for MMO type games that will be online anyway and could really benefit from cloud processing. In a few years that could be cool. I can not see it for SP games, not for a long long time if ever. This is pie in the sky stuff.

So about those numbers. How many people are playing games on Xbox 360 at any one time? I really have no idea so let's call it 5 million. MS want 5 million end users to be benefitting from cloud computation to the point that it's 4x what their console alone could do (they said 4x right?). So that's 4.8tf per user. 240 million tf, at any one time, 24/7. Probably way more than that when a big game releases. Factor in broadband bandwidth, latency/ping, many other things I haven't thought of... Not to mention how this doesn't do anything for memory bandwidth limitations.

    This is silly right?

It's basically an always online console if they are pushing for all this cloud stuff in their games. MS are full of it.

Heres another little bit of info found on Polygon. http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/20/434...next-gen-debut

"While an internet connection will be required for the console, the company is also experimenting with special exemption codes that could be given to select people in very particular, internet-free situations, like active-duty soldiers serving in war zones, sources tell Polygon."

Well, at least they may have an option for people that can't get internet service.
I bet some games will require it though.

Yep exactly. And not only that but the more people they get online then the more potential Gold subscribers there will be.

4+TF of power and if it doesn't just blow everything out the water, people are going to be letdown. Again.

    No. That's 100% official.

What's murky right now is the whole 'fee' business regarding used games.

That was what I meant. MS says it will contribute graphically while others dismiss it altogether and I'm just confused. It's a mess. I hope it will be explained properly at E3.

(I'm not doubting you one bit) but where was that confirmed? It's just that I read a Kotaku/N4G (or whatever) article that suggests that particular detail may have been murky and that MS were confused, themselves (RE: that Phil Harrison statement).

    EDIT:

I've kept searching but all I get are things form 5/6 days ago (when all the confusion came out).
