    Sony: Online DRM a possibility.

    http://www.computerandvideogames.com...m-is-possible/

E3 2013: DRM-free PS4 is a PR play – expect similar policies across both consoles, say sources
    http://www.edge-online.com/news/e3-2...s-say-sources/
Several development sources have told us that they expect game publishers to implement similar DRM policies across Xbox One and PS4, despite what has unfolded at E3 this week.

Our contacts described Sony’s conference announcements as a PR play, and revealed that its decision to go DRM-free was made at the very last minute.

Each platform holder’s DRM policy has changed continually over the last few months, they said, though Microsoft’s initial stance was much tougher than its position today. This suggests that the platform holder’s decision to let publishers decide for themselves whether to implement DRM on Xbox One was not part of the original plan.

Ultimately, the developers we spoke to understand the need to protect the revenues made on their work, and expect to see broadly similar DRM restrictions across both PS4 and Xbox One – in one instance, it was suggested that these measures were essential for the console business to survive.

We were also told that final publishing agreements will not be drawn up for at least another month, so the terms of engagement could yet change once more before each console launches at the end of the year.

So only first party titles will be free of the online DRM for sure?

    From the article:

This situation is complex, but the outcome is thought to be:

Any PS4 game disc can be rented, resold, offered to friends (etc) with no checks or restrictions.

The online (multiplayer) component of third-party games could be restricted to second-users (with a paid online pass required to unlock).

However, the online component of third-party games may not be locked - the decision is down to the publisher.

When it comes to first-party games, there will be no online restrictions.

Traditional DRM policy (no lending) applies to digitally downloaded games, as usual.
So pretty much like PS3 then

both the title of the article and your article title seem to aim at further muddle the water, reading comprehension for the win:

Tretton told GTTV that, "The DRM decision is going to have to be in the hands of the third parties, that's not something we're going to dictate or control or mandate or implement."

    Nothing new here, move along.
You need a users permission to quote them in your sig.

So they do have DRM but only for games purchased through PSN? (which would be obvious anyway)

All disc based games will work like they do now. That's good.

This is what was said earlier. Devs will have the option of an online pass type of DRM, just like we have with the 360 and PS3 now.

This is noting like the One's DRM and connectivity requirement.

Exactly. Some sites out there are trying to make it more complicated and are causing confusion but basically it's just as it is now. Someone CAN do an online pass (or I'm sure there are other options) but bottom line, Sony isn't baking DRM into the system and will not help publishers enforce those things. I'm sure we will see some other types of strategies for publishers to try and recover some money from used game sales, etc., but it won't be at the system level and it won't be through requiring online access for sure.

That's the big difference here, after all. MS has built in DRM into their hardware and system that can be used to enforce strict policies and actually remove content from your system. MS is trying to blend the physical media market with the digital only market. The way they are doing it will probably be what we all deal with when consoles go digital and download only, but I think the backlash proves that the market isn't ready for that yet. I don't think it WILL be ready and accepting of all that until we are no longer dealing with physical media and purchases.

All you have to decide is what to do with the time give to you....

I don't mind the way it is now. That better be the extent of the drm on the new console.

Maybe MS should have gone DD only and not have to deal with the DRM issue at all. We all expect not to be able to sell digital content so used games wouldn't matter.

Sure they would have had some backlash but nothing like they're getting now. Plus, they could have put a positive spin on it and made it palatable.

Sony is actually keeping F2P as F2P too, on top of not being all anal with DRM. PS4 has the PS3 method, nothing has changed...but that won't stop people looking for some anti-consumer spin on it.

Just imagine how bad being banned from XBL will be on Xbone. Not only can they stop you playing online, they could effectively brick your machine. I expect there's going to be some drama when this starts to happen.

Update: Sony responded to our query, reiterating that all disc-based games will be able to be traded and resold at the owner's discretion, regardless of whether it's first or third party.

"Similar to PS3, we will not dictate the online used game strategy (the ability to play used games online) of its publishing partners," a Sony representative told Polygon. "As announced last night, PS4 will not have any gating restrictions for used disc-based games. When a gamer buys a PS4 disc they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever."

The Sony representative also confirmed that the Online Pass program used in some Sony first-party games on PS3 would not be used at all for its titles on PS4.
