    Dual shock 4 touchscreen

Is anyone else curious as to how it's going to be put to use? I can't imagine it having a lot of function. It's not that big. Can anyone provide some examples?

For certain there will be swiping. It can also detect light and dark. You can also push it down like a button, similar to a laptop touch pad. I think, personally, that most games will use it as a way to avoid having a bunch of alternative functions.

For Example: Take a game with lots of on-the-fly menus, like Mass Effect. The touch pad could be mapped to powers and weapons, so you don't have to pull out of the action to change biotic powers or weaponry. Just swipe. I think Kill Zone does this.

I've seen some articles on it, and some of the things that have been done are things like. Swipe Up, Swipe Down, Swipe Diag Bottom to Top, Swipe Diag Top to bottom, Swipe Left, Swipe Right all being recognized to provide various inputs (i.e. Can be used to do various things, pull up maps, switch weapons, cast various spells ... ) and by doing this it can eliminate/reduce the need for the 'Weapon/Select' wheels and that sort of thing.

These are things that go a bit beyond the obvious of moving a curser/selecting an item and drag and drop/navigating a UI/easier input to a keyboard/etc.

In Killzone you issue different commands to your owl depending on which way you swipe.

This will really help with the menu issues on the controllers...i never thought about that.

i like the inclusion of the touchpad as it allows developers to bypass that oh so console flaw of having very few buttons doing very many things.

Killzone uses it to issue orders, Warframe uses it to execute special attacks.

Sony did us a solid by having it AUGMENT physical buttons rather then replacing it. it could be used as a quick tap to open up inventory and then swipe to close it.

you essentially have the potential to move all not critical button mapping to the touchpad so that all the buttons do something that benefits gameplay.
PC has been doing this for a while in the form of the number keys at the top of the keyboard.

it opens up the controller input in a big way

Would have been better if it was Screen, even in the same size, opens whole new ways for developers to innovate and would also give feedback instead of just issuing commands.

Unfortunately that would end up being cost prohibitive. Basically toss on an extra $50 for a low end screen, and something that many would complain about. And these features can easily be supported via PS Vita or Droid (Phone or Tablet.) So for those who don't care about the feature, they'd end up spending a $50 per controller extra. For those who do care about it there are alternatives available.

I think Sony made the right choice in not including a screen on the controller.

I do like the Nintendo screen more since they had introduced it first but yea, i totally agree with you here, it'd be a waste of money as the market is too broad to push this onto them.

touchpad is definitely an important addition to traditional controllers, kudos to Sony.

If they do this then I hope they do it well. Using the touch-pad feature on the Ouya browser (yes it's small and terrible) isn't very inviting simply because of the awkward angle you have to odd the controller at to make sublet movements.

I'd have to get used to it but swiping to pick weapons or opening doors would feel strange at first

This little touchpad seems like a gimmick to me.
The PSV has a huge touchpad on the back and i haven't seen any game yet that made good use of it.

It's nice to have but i doubt it'll change the way we play games significantly (just like sixaxis).

Besides what KZ explained about it I saw only one possible use for it. If you watched the E3 Watch Dogs trailer you might have noticed that the guy had to use a certain symbol to open the door. He did it on a touch pad on the wall. I could see the game making us using it in the same form on the controller pad.

You probably right, but i prefer to use Controller+Tablet more than Vita, because the controller is more comfortable than Vita and have triggers. Using 2 devices isn't very practical too but it's better for me.Anyway i doubt tham many developers will even consider this, they will just add some useless gestures to the touchpad and that's it.

What is the resolution of the touch-pad on the Ouya?

The DS4 touch screen has a lot of potential. I'm liking the possibilities a whole lot more than i did with the Sixaxis.

Not great that's for sure mind you the resolution isn't the big issue it's the strange position you have you hold your hands in to use it. Great for swipes and things like that but anything intricate and it quickly becomes a pain.
