    Post PlayStation 4 FAQ

This is the frequently asked questions thread for those who are new to the PlayStation 4 or need a reference guide while browsing the forums for quick facts and knowledge of Sony's next-gen platform.

    ---

PlayStation 4, DualShock 4 controller and PlayStation Camera (pictured)

PlayStation 4 Release Date - November 2013 (exact date currently unknown)

    PlayStation 4 Price - $399 / €399 / 349 / AU$549

PlayStation 4 Package - Only 1 SKU is announced and it includes the PlayStation 4, DualShock 4 Controller and an Ear-bud mono headset. The new camera is NOT included and will be sold separately for $59 / €59 / 54.

Hard-Drive Capacity - 500 GB HDD is also upgrade-able for more space internally. Details on how to upgrade are currently unknown.

    PlayStation 4 Specs -

PlayStation 4 Launch Titles - PlayStation 4 will be launching with Knack, Killzone: Shadow Fall, DriveClub, Need for Speed: Rivals, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Basement Crawl, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, Madden 25, NBA Live 14, LEGO: Marvel Super Heroes, Skylanders: Swap Force, Tiny Brains, War Thunder, Blacklight: Retribution, PlanetSide 2, Warframe and DC Universe Online.

PlayStation 4 Game Prices - Same as they are now, $59.99.

    DualShock 4 Price - The DualShock 4 will retail for $59 / €59 / 54.

Trophies/PSN Transfer - Your username and all of your trophies will transfer over to the PlayStation 4, due to the system using your regular PlayStation Network account since the launch of the PlayStation 3.

Internet Connection - PlayStation 4 will NOT be required to be connected to the internet in order to function properly or play single-player games.

    PlayStation Plus Facts

    * - Your PlayStation Plus subscription will carry over to the PlayStation 4.

    * - PlayStation Plus subscription is required to play online multiplayer games. Free-to-play games DO NOT require PlayStation Plus.

    * - If you're a subscriber of PlayStation Plus, every month you will receive a new game for free for your shiny, new PlayStation 4.

    * - DriveClub will be included during the launch of the PlayStation 4 as a free game via PlayStation Plus.

Region Lock - PlayStation 4 does NOT have region locking.

Social Aspects - PlayStation 4 allows for cross-game chat and cross-game video chat. Players will also be able to watch their friends play and vice versa.

PlayStation 4 Friend Remote Play - Users may help their friends get through a difficult part of the game via remote gameplay across the network and take control of their controller if the owner allows it when the other user sends in a request.

It is currently unknown if players can unlock trophies via remote-play help.

Friend List Limit - The amount of friends you can have on your PSN account has been vastly increased. However, the exact number is currently unknown. Note that the PlayStation 3 limited you to 100 friends.

Online Downloads - PlayStation 4 will be able to pre-download content as your playing the game. For example, let's say you went to the digital store and decided to press X to buy/play the game. You will start playing the game instantly instead of waiting for the download.

While you're playing the first level, the second level is already being downloaded in the background and so on. You may also choose to download the multiplayer portion first or vice versa depending on what you feel like playing first.

Digital Content - Every single PlayStation 4 title that is being released will be available day one on its release via digital download alongside the retail copies at GameStop (unless it's a digital downloadable title only).

Video Sharing/Recording - PlayStation 4 will allow players to video-record their content and even stream/broadcast as they're playing it.

From what we know so far, the user can record the last 15 minutes of the game played. Certain parts may not be recorded due to story spoilers and it's up to the developers on how they handle that). Stay tuned for any updates.

Used Games - You can trade, sell, eBay and borrow games just like today on your PlayStation 4 considering you have the physical/retail copies of the game. It is currently unknown if you can share accounts on multiple PlayStation 4 systems to game-share like you can on the PlayStation 3.

Online check-in - You will NOT be required to check-in online for any kind of authentication.

    ---

That's it for now guys. Let me know if I missed anything. I will add it here.

    ---

Thread Closed for now. SEE UPDATED THREAD.

    Great FAQ.

Some more info here about PlayGo in how it copies data from blu-rays while you are playing to increase load times.
Also mentions a secondary chip does all the work although you may not need to include that part.

I wonder if it is known yet if the PS4 hard drive is SATA 2 or SATA 3. My current complaint with hard drives is that they are always increasingly slower than everything else in a system and end up being the biggest bottleneck you could ever imagine. And I hope we can swap in solid states as they are doing so well performance-wise right now.

I doubt you'll be able to swap in solid states, but rest assured that before the next gen is over there will be SKUs that come only with solid state storage (once the cost of solid state becomes less).

It's good that they'll be caching the BD onto the HDD when playing it. I wonder if that remains resident for a while (i.e. if you go to another game does it completely wipe what's been stored, or only does so when space is needed.) I also think this would make a Hybrid HDD (SSHD) that much more valuable.

PS: It decreases load times not increase

Uhm, there's no reason why an SSD would not work. There's nothing special that needs to be done from a machine (PC or PS4) standpoint for an SSD, it simply see's it as a SATA HDD.

Why wouldn't you be able to use a SSD on the PS4? I know people use them on the PS3 without a problem and I see no reason why the PS4 would be any different. As for the SATA 2/3 issue, I am 99% sure it will have SATA 3 since it will also have USB 3.0 and both SATA 3 and USB 3.0 use the same southbridge chipsets.

What will be nice is if the system is SATA 3 then the real performance of a SSD drive will show on the PS4 compared to the PS3! With SATA 3 you will have 600MB/s throughput, which will allow a SSD to run at full speed, where if you plug a SSD into the PS3 it won't run at full speed because of the limited throughput.

good idea. we'll have a bunch of newcomers in the coming months. i'll put this in my sig. You might want to add the following:

    background downloads and playGo
pictures of the machine, box art, and interface (could be links, maybe even videos?)
cross game chat and things like netflix wont require plus either
as long as there is one ps plus account on a system, all accounts on said system can play online
    dualshock 4 features and pictures
    stats for the camera
    interaction with smartphones/ tablets
    remote play on vita!
maybe some game videos or tech demos

here's a link to the official PS flickr

    and pics of the interface:

I also linked this thread in my ask a ps4 question thread. I hope they form a symbiotic relationship perhaps you could link it in the OP?

The board inside the PS4 will have SATA3 Ports for sure they are not an expensive part anymore the newest I/O is SATA Express which is SATA3.2 so they may have that but SATA 3 would cost a little bit less, I reckon Sony will have put the highest SATA speed in knowing people will want to use SSD drives in it

    Win 7 Ult 64bit, Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Rev.1/Bios F8 , INTEL i7 2600k 3.40ghz, Crucial Ballistix Elite 8GB DDR3 1866mhz (1600mhz@1.60v), Crucial 128GB M4 SSD, Seagate 500GB 7,200rpm, Hitachi 1TB 7,200rpm (Back-Up HDD), HIS 7850 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E Card, OCZ Fatality 750 Mod PSU, LG DVD-RAM RW

I know this is not yet well known, but do you think PS4 will support more video formats?
I currently have a Sony Cybershot Camera, but the videos that I make with it are not supported by PS3. They are in .avi format.
Almost everyone will say: buy console that has games that you want, and those who say otherwise are ignorant.

Do you think PS4 will have Blast Processing to help the CPU take on new tasks without being held back by such functions as moving data between the Main Memory and I/O Ports?.

I believe that's what he means.

It all depends on the game. DCUniverse and Final Fantasy XIV will have PC, PS3 and PS4 cross play.

Something like COD, BF4 I doubt it. I would like to see cross play PS3/4 for Diablo 3 and Destiny tho.

PCs are very much like Air Conditioners.
They both become utterly useless once you start to open up Windows....

A lot has changed since June, one example would be the friend limit has since been confirmed to hold 2000 friends.

Overall presentation as well needs work, might be better off starting from scratch... IMO
