    [Article] Opinion: The Difficulty Dilemma

    http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featur...y-dilemma.aspx

I think of this too. I used to feel the need to try and beat the game on the hardest (or at least, a notch harder than the normal) difficulty setting.

Over the years, though, I think I've been part of the crowd that is more about the experience, the story, etc; rather than saying "I beat teh game on INSANZEGODZ MODE".

    Anyone else?

I don't care so much about difficulty so much as depth and strategy. Dark Souls is difficult and rewarding to master because it has that depth and strategy. Sadly tho, most games these days just bump up the damage taken to the extreme and write that off as their "hard mode." If more devs tackle game difficulty the way From Software does, then more difficulty is definitely wanted.

I play on hard because you usually get all the other difficulty trophies upon completion
Most of the times it doesn't really make a difference because you can't afford to take alot of damage anyway.

Latest example TombRaider - i died in the except same situations on hard and easy.

Here's my complex thought process flow

Am I doing co-op with my bro-in-law and if so how many days will be down for?
    • Two days or more: HARD
    • Less than 2 days: Normal

Does the franchise have a reputation for hard 'normal' modes (Lost Planet for example)

    • Yes: Normal
    • No: HARD

Does the HARD mode unlock more achievement points or/and other avatar or character stuff?
    • Yes: Hard
    • No: depends on answers to other questions above

Is it a game I primarily purchase for the online mp, rather than the sp story (Killzone for example)?
    • Yes: Normal
    • No: depends on answers to the questions above

    Good reply.

I think I more or less go through this myself. at least, particularly the 2nd and 3rd scenarios.

I usually play my games on "Normal". It gives me enough of a challenge without being too hard.

Currently Playing: Lumines Electronic Symphony (Vita)

    Nowadays I am hard always.

I chose easy or normal years ago (Genesis, PS1, PS2 era) but these days I always go in hard and even then I often find it too easy.
    I like the challenge.

Depends on the game. I played Uncharted on normal for an hour or two, and there was just no fun in it. So from then on, I've only played on hard and crushing. Then there's those goddamn Ninja Gaiden games. I like them, I really do, but playing those games on hard an up gives me brain damage.

My thing about difficulty I can never play a game on easy cause that means it's all about the story, but I want the story plus experience. If I make it through a game without dying that is the ultimate form of disrespect lol j/k, but it does upset me a little. Like Kingdom Hearts 2 played that game died once at Xaldin and honestly when I found out how truly easy he was even on their best difficulty I was mad with the game.

Still though I'm not saying I enjoy dying, but at least dying let's me know "Hey dude can't just run right through levels and or the game itself." And that I also need some kind of strategy to win.

Now games like Ninja Gaiden......................not even going to talk about lolz.
