Fat PS3 and somewhat frequent stutter. Deeper symptom??

    Hello all,

Not sure if this problem has arisen before on the forum - I conducted a search but I'm not yielding anything (I'm sure it has surfaced before, maybe I just fail at the search function).

Yesterday, I decided to play BLOPS2 on our fat PS3. A problem seems to have transpired (not sure if it occurred last week) whereby the game will fairly frequently cop a stutter (or would it be more precise to say a chop in the framrate??).

Would anyone know what this points to? I loaded the same game last night to play, and there was no problem on my slim PS3. Any advice/suggestion would be most welcome.

Any other symptoms? Your fat may be on its way out. A lot of people's fats are malfunctioning these days.

Hi Black Wolf, and thanks for your reply.

This tick (I'm not sure how best to describe what I'm experiencing) happens even before the game is actually loaded. In other words, when you go to play multiplayer, the console starts to sign in into PSN and the little Treyarch symbol thing has a revolving orange glow to it. This will also 'tick' every so often.

I'm not sure if this is PS3 related per se, but the screen does have a more yellow tinge to it. But this may be due to my brother having changed settings on the projector a while back to accommodate for an Amiga CD32, I will need to check that out.

The console hadn't been used for ages, possibly for over 12 months. It did see some heavy-ish usage when we first bought it.

I've not seen any other symptoms.

Does this still bode ill for the console you think?

Does it only happen with Black Ops 2? Try some other games with your Fat and see if the same problem is there. Usually when programs/games etc stutter it could mean the console is overheating.

Does the fat have the latest updates?

Hi Raizer, thank you also for the your reply,

Hmm, now that you mention it, I don't remember it occurring on BF3 last week. I will go and test out real soon.

When my brother hooked it all up again a few weeks back, I am certain he had brought all updates on to the console, but I will check that as well.

The fat PS3s are on their last legs. Nothing lasts forever.

Bite your tongue, don't jinx it

Sorry for the delayed reply, all. It would seem it's a heating problem That first night I posted this thread, I played BF3, and it was a flawless experience (apart from a bad kdr...). Played blops2 again yesterday, and it was a while before we started getting the 'ticks' (a little weird, as it's warmer than last week - it's winter here).

My brother suggested that it may possibly be since we have the console standing, as he doesn't recall this happening. Would it be better to have it sitting than standing?

Back up all your saves to a USB asap, it does sound like it's on its last legs, I'd try and trade it in and get whatever you can off one of the slimmer models. Worst thing happened to me: Mine just died completely, I had nothing backed up at all and it was just a paperweight, and I didn't play on it for long periods of time or anything, first console to die on me. If it's a 60GB you'll get quite a bit for it too probably.

Oh dear. Luckily it isn't my main PS3 machine as I've got the PS3 slim for that type of usage. The fat did see some heavier usage in the early days, but we were both taken away by WoW for a long time, and would really then use it mainly as a movie watching machine. (This is not to say it was never used for gaming.) In the past two years it's been switched on probably three-four times to watch a film.

Is there nothing that can be done to save it?

I'll discuss options with my brother (he bought it way back when).

    Thanks for your reply, Aaron.

Well if you have knowledge in soldering electronics you could just continuously repair it yourself, if not then I'd get whatever you can for it and put it towards another (if you want 2 PS3s). You could get one of those really cheap 12GB Super Slims if you're just wanting it as a media hub.

Hmm, I have worked in a soldering environment, but not for something like this. I use it nowadays to play about 4-5 hrs per weekend on it (because it's connected to a projector, and this for the past two-three weeks). My main is in the lounge room.

If you really want to keep it, then like Aaron said, you can fix it. The fixes are only temporary in most cases though and you'll most likely keep doing temporary fixes till it's beyond repair.

Is it a 60GB model btw?

Yes, it's definitely the 60gb version of the fat.

It's so sad that they are all dying off, our Amigas and C64 are still going strong after all these years.

Yeah, unfortunately the 60GB models are known to run hotter/have a higher failure rate out of all the PS3's. You could always sell it and take the chance of buying another on eBay?

black ops 2 does tht with me too and I also have a fat. however, none of my other games do it so it's probably just a programming glitch like the horrible static sound that happens sometimes

omg, thank you! :O I'll still keep an eye on it; bf3 the other day again ran flawlessly as did blops2 yesterday so I've eased off the panic-button. Now with your post I feel like dancing on the ceiling again. Thanks mate!

Bought a number of games today from EB (what am I doing!?!??!? I need to save up for the PS4s lol) so it will give us a chance to test the in terms of wider breadth tomorrow - I'm sure everything will be fine on the fatty

I like Treyarch - trippy themes, but especially some trippy music
