Microsoft: No Xbox One in Japan this Year: Asks Journalist Not to Report Negatively

The Japanese gaming site 4Gamer still managed to grab an interview and to ask what’s up with Microsoft’s upcoming console in the archipelago of the rising sun.

As part of the interview Microsoft Japan President and CEO Yasuyuki Higuchi confirmed that the Xbox One won’t land on the Japanese shelves any time soon.

"For the launch of Xbox One Japan is a Tier 2 country and not a Tier 1 country, so it’ll come with the second wave, that will be delayed a little bit [compared to North America]."

When the interviewer pressed him to confirm that the console won’t be launched in 2013 he did just that.

"That’s right. It’ll launch after the Tier 1 markets."
Microsoft’s executives knew they were walking on eggshells as they talked to the press, since the Xbox brand isn’t exactly popular in Japan, and when the reporter concluded the interview telling Microsoft Vice President and Executive Officer of the Consumer & Partner Group Haruaki Kayama that he’d wait for further information on Xbox One soon, he responded laughing:

"Yes, so please don’t report too negatively."

MS Xbone have NOTHING for the Japanese market. No Japanese games, no must have TV content, no attractive price, and no respect.

For as bad as that interview was, they are doing the right thing. Why concentrate on a market that they will never capture no matter what they do.

agrees that is at least a solid business strategy that ms came up with on their own instead of having to change some sort of policy

Whelp thats the Xbone dead for Jrpgs.
Every time someone from Microsoft opens their mouth all I hear is: "This is why you shouldn't buy an Xbox one".

They're more screwed than they were with the 360. I question why even launch in those countries at all then?

I love how MS think the media are bullying it all the time now! "Stop it guys! Stop beng so negative!"

News is good or bad, the way you report it won't change things..it's like reporting a mass murder with a smile on your face.

that may very well be the case.

Having a price disadvantage with no year headstart is going to hurt them bad. Especially if the PS4 launches in those countries first.

Love his sense of humor...he even joked about being negative. Nice.

Xbox One shouldn't be in Japan at all anyway.

    Possible.

All I know is, the only thing the 360 does for MS in Japan is provide fanboy fodder to laugh at abysmal sales

I would suspect they need to evaluate cost vs. reward here
    LMAO

Why launch in Japan at all? MS will never crack that market. And MS created their own bad press with dumb decisions and absurd PR statements.

They only sold 1.5 million consoles in almost 8 years in Japan. Don't you think that alone kills Japanese developer support. No game will ever make money on the Xbox 360 in Japan, unless maybe it was an Indie title.

All the more reason PS4 will get first billing from Japanese game developers.

Well we did get to see Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean The Last Hope on the X360 first (and some exclusives).

yeah, but in the end, how much did that really contribute to the 360? I am not into such numbers, but I am guessing the business lost won't amount to much?

Hard call to make here. Completely shut out console localization, or market to a people that have disdain for your product anyway
    LMAO

Didn't the Xbox 360 only well 1 million in Japan in total? Japan should be considered Tier 3 if you ask me.

They definitely don't "need" the japanese market if the Xbone does well in other markets. They did just fine without Japan this gen.

Well its hard to say now. Back then, at least X360 had reasons to sway JRPG fans to buy the console. It was also cheaper, had early launch, focus on the hardcore, and had the love of the Internet community as well as the darling of the press.

How will they do without Japanese developer support? Given the way things has been going lately with Xbone, we really can't assume it will do just fine without Japan just like the X360 did. In fact, they probably need Japanese developer support more than ever given the recent debacles.

I don't know why MS is even trying again. Just pissing away money. Especially with it likely to be out after PS4 has gained much traction over there. Just seems like a pointless battle. Might as well spend that money marketing in a country you can win.
