    Why preorder games?

One thing I don't quite understand is why one should actually preorder a game?
...they can be downloaded, so there is no danger they might be out of stock at your local store?

Ok, in some games, you get bonuses for preordering.
...but apart from this, I see no advantage?!

I don't plan on downloading games a whole lot. And some games you want straight away, especially with the console launch... it would be nice to have something to play.

So people that want a physical copy don't have to worry?

It would be pretty neat if you could pre-order digital games on the PSN-store, so it starts downloading the moment it releases.

I actually hope it'll be like on PC where you can download the game before it is launched and as soon as it is released you can play the game

Or this. Really, Sony should have an office where people can submit ideas for the PS4. Oh wait, NeoGAF.

Pre-ordering games does not just guarantee you a copy when it releases. Some stores have exclusive DLC when you pre-order from them.

I used to do it when games were too anticipated I may not be guaranteed a copy day one, but now I do it because of the bonuses.

Downloading takes too long. Especially if it's a game with a huge GB size *cough* The Last Of Us *cough*
If you preorder it, you have a disk in which you can just shove it into your PS3 and play it almost instantly.

Well, yeah, but for me it'll probably take less long to download it than to go to the shop, queue up, buy the game and then go home so I can play it.

It would be nice if Sony confirmed pre-loading so we can download before game releases.

Pretty much the only reason I preorder is cause the games comes with some neat DLC/a steelbook (Though thats been moved to a "instore only" and futureshop is 45 mins away) Im interested in, or I can save 1/3 of the price (The Last of Us, and the 7 or so other preorders are all 1/3 cheaper or so)

Indeed. Rewards. A lot of my amazon preorders I get extra dlc or sometimes if I am lucky I get a $10 off future game purchases (very nice). I also get pre-order lowest price guarentee where if the price goes down I get the cheapest price.

Also last gen at launch...many places only got 2 or 3 copies of games in and some sold out. I don't think it will be that way this gen but it happens sometimes. Also pre-ordering gets me day 1 delivery from amazon.

Most PS3 games have forced installs, so there's rarely any instantly playable games. Some games install the entire disc too so might as well just download the game.

How does that change the situation? I still have to queue up. I still have to pay. And even if I wouldn't haveto pay, that's only like 2 minutes of my time.

I do it just to be able to put a little money down at a time rather than 60 a pop. helps me with bills and not letting the woman spend it lol

I see your point. Although most of the 'exclusives' is just free or early access to dlc that comes out a few weeks/months after the game is released. I pre order because of the dlc and because i like to go to stores and shop around and im not a big fan of digital download stuff. I like to have a physical copy. It just feels right. I don't make a habit of buying something I can't use a few of my senses with.

I'm with u I'm not too big on digital download. if I pay 60 I want it in my hands. I also like to go see what GameStop has going on, I hardly ever do it for the exclusives or dlc and whatnot

Well the main reason why people preorder is to guarantee a copy on release day. As for the fact that they can be downloaded, some people just prefer to have a physical copy, myself included. To people like me, preordering is the only way to guarantee yourself a copy. I thought this was pretty straight forward.

Personally, however, I've never preordered a game. I have such a large backlog and purchase so many games that it's not worth paying full price for a game on day one. I often wait a few months, where the game will have dropped a bit in price and then get it while it's cheap - I actually get all my games for about 20-25. I haven't paid full price for a game for over 2 years!

Though saying that, I'll probably pay the full 40 for The Last of Us, as I feel Naughty Dog deserve my money. Although I don't think I'll ever preorder anything for the forseeable future, unless there's a truly significant reason to do so, which there never is.

So, to answer your original question as to why people preorder: it guarantees you a copy at launch. That's all there is to it.
