    PS4 can use DirectX 11 - DEBUNKEDEDEDED

Been saving this one up for a while, then I forgot about it. LOL @ me!

PS4 can (and will) use Direct X 11
Sony to improve DirectX 11 for the PS4, triple Blu-ray speeds

GamesBy Matthew Humphries Mar. 28, 2013 12:15 pm
Sony hasn’t released much in the way of new details about thePlayStation 4 since its launch event last month. But at the Game Developer Conference this week Chris Norden, senior staff engineer at Sony, finally went into some more detail about the underlying hardware.
The PS4 sees Sony move to a 64-bit x86 chip architecture, which will be music to the ears of developers, especially those used to working on PC games. The good news doesn’t stop there, though. Developers will be able to take advantage of Microsoft’s latest industry standardDirectX API — DirectX 11.1, but Sony has taken the time to improve upon it, pushing the feature set beyond what is available for PC games development.
Those improvements include better shader pipeline access, improved debugging support features out the box, and much lower level access to the system hardware enabling developers to do “more cool things.” That’s achieved not only through an modified DirectX 11.1 API, but also a secondary low-level API specifically for the PS4 hardware.
As well as having more control over the hardware, Norden explained that developers get complete control over the CPU, GPU, and RAM. That means the GPU isn’t just limited to handling graphics on the system, it can run arbitrary code. Developers also get to decide how to use/split the 8GB RAM between different tasks. There’s no predefined limits meaning there’s more headroom to experiment.
One area of the console that is sure to please gamers is the Blu-raydrive the PS4 will ship with. Not only does that ensure the console can double as a Blu-ray player just like the PS3 did, it’s also a 3x faster drive than in the PS3, which should help with install and game load times.
You may also remember Sony mentioned live streaming of games and recording of key gaming moments was a major feature of the PS4. Norden explained that was due to an extra chip being included in the system that will always contain the last few minutes of play. By doing that, Sony can handle live streaming automatically without impacting system performance, and gamers don’t have to remember to start recording when they think something memorable will happen. They instead just have to remember to save what the PS4 already recorded automatically.
Now read: Nvidia walked away from PS4 hardware negotiations

Yep. This means, quite literally, all a developer needs to do is optimize their code from PC to run on PS4. Now, it almost literally does itself unless you want to squeeze the system using SPURS and get dirty.

This WILL save developers and publishers some coin. It WILL mean that PS4 gets treated infinitely better than PS3 did. ..and well, it kinda goes without saying regarding that other 'box'..

We knew the PS4 would have support for up to DirectX11.1 for several months. The minor issue came up a couple weeks ago when MS said only Windows8 and Xbox would have DirectX11.2. It's a minor issue since OpenGL will updated with DX11.2 features and Sony has already stated they have the capability to expand DX and OpenGL on the PS4.

So it doesn't use DX 11 like the article says? Hmmm. Interested to see where this is gonna go.

That doesn't mean that PS4 will actually be using DX11. It sounds like it's features will be compatible with DX11 and they are improving it. Sony has it's own API called PSL(Playstation Shader Language) and that's what ps4 will be using. And don't forget MS just showcased direct x 11.2 which improves upon 11.1 and is exclusive to windows 8 and xbox-one. I'm 99%sure that Playstation won't be using direct x.

. Sony claims that the PS4 will support a "DirectX 11.1+", with the plus standing for better debugger and more direct access to the shader pipeline. Exact details are few and far between, but since the GPU at the heart of the PS4 is based on Graphics Core Next, we don't expect enormous surprises.

That doesn't mean the Sony PS4 actually uses DirectX -- Sony's own API is dubbed the PlayStation Shader Language and dev tools for it run on Windows 7 64-bit. Virtual Studio plugins are also available for VS 2010 and 2012. Programmers will be able to talk to CPU and GPU simultaneously without suspending one task to run another.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't they get the $#@! sued out of them if they said they were using DirectX and actually weren't. It sound like DirectX core with additions. I don't know but I'm sure just like anything else they would need rights just to use the name. Otherwise it would have been called something completely different if it was a clone.

I've always thought that DirectX was a Microsoft APU. I'm shocked if MS have allowed Sony to use it.

Good things for gamers though! If the rumour is true it benefits me as that means more games will utilise DirectX and that means my PC will be better utilised. Win-win for all involved!

    It's a modified (read customized) DX11.1 API.

Apparently, DirextX support is built into the GPU.

According to the official product specs, the A8-3850 packs a quad-core 2.9GHz processor with an integrated graphics chip. The APU will work in tandem with the system's dedicated GPU, the HD 7670, a DirectX 11-enabled card clocked to 1GHz with up to 1GB of dedicated VRAM.
    http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/04/...ocessing-specs

Not sure why Sony would bother improving DX11 if their developers couldn't actually use it.
