Atari: From 'High Score' to 'Game Over'

    NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
Video games are coming out of the shadows in China.

China is expected to lift a 13-year ban on the sale of video game consoles, as long as they are manufactured within Shanghai's new free trade zone, the South China Morning Post is reporting.

Consoles have been available on the black market in China, but video game manufacturers, such as Nintendo, Sony (SNE), and Microsoft (MSFT,Fortune 500), have not been able to sell their products legally there since 2000 -- even if the consoles weremanufactured in the country. Nintendo's Wii, Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's Playstation have been manufactured in China, according the the newspaper.
The change is part of a broader policy supported by Premier Li Keqiang, aimed at opening up the Chinese economy. The government is also expected to allow foreign banks to set up subsidiaries in the new Shanghai free trade zone, as well as allow foreign firms to participate in commodities exchanges there. Beijing approved a plan to launch the Shanghai zone on July 3, the report said.

Although the new rules have not yet been made public, they are widely expected to allow the sale of gaming consoles once the Ministry of Culture approves them. That ministry spearheaded the ban on the sale of consoles more than a decade ago, citing concern about the content of video games.

One of the strongest emerging markets in the world economy is now open for business. This changes so many dynamics for gaming, it's not even funny!

Wow... that's REALLY big news. Maybe they'll remove some of the millions of other stupid bans they have in that country. <.<

This is great news. I hope game development grows there for the worldwide market as well. Imagine their version of Call of Duty, haha. The west would be the enemies.

They've been talking about this for some time now. I think I posted a thread about it last year but nothing came from it.

Either way, it'll be good for the industry. Until they hack the $#@! to hell and back.

Nah I think they are getting serious in terms of cracking down on IP infringement... the new guy in power has been cleaning the party up and promoting Western-ish agendas.

You wouldn't like to see The Order: Chinese restaurant in 1886?

    I'd love that. It'd be like a business sim/RPG.

    China to end console ban

If china lifts the ban on game consoles this could be an amazing opportunity for Sony and Microsoft. If you could tap into this huge market that china has you could sell hundreds of millions of units.

According to a new report from the South China Morning Post, China may end its 13-year ban on the sale of game consoles, provided the systems are made in Shanghai's new free-trade zone.

According to Chinese government documents, foreign console manufacturers like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft would also need approval from "culture-related authorities" to promote and sell their products in the country.

China enacted the console ban in 2000, blocking the sale of systems over concerns about potential harm to the physical and mental development of children.

"They still need approval from the culture ministry and other relevant government bodies for their products, which I think is reasonable, because the government wants to make sure the content of your games is not too violent or politically sensitive for young people," one source said.

Some consoles are available in China through black market sources, while touch-enabled devices and smartphones, like the iPhone and iPad, are allowed because they are not deemed gaming devices.

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We are always evaluating how and where to expand Xbox availability to other parts of the world, but have no additional comment at this time." Representatives for Sony and Nintendo were not immediately available to comment.

The state-run China Daily reported at the end of January that the country's Ministry of Culture was holding discussions to consider ending the ban. The new Shanghai free-trade zone is endorsed by Premier Li Keqiang, who is reportedly interested in making the Chinese economy more open and available to the world at large.
Your life is the result of the decisions you make throughout it, if you dont like your life then it is time to start making better decisions.
