Microsoft to announce indie self-publishing, new certification process

    Good stuff.

Another unpopular Microsoft policy appears to be heading for the history books. Sources tell Game Informer that the company is reversing course on its publishing requirements.

This will allow independent studios to access digital distribution without a publishing partner.

Additionally, we have learned that Microsoft is drastically overhauling its certification process. The company will use a model similar to iTunes and is targeting a 14-day turnaround for an approvals.

Instead of extensive code checking, the company will be looking for terms of service violations and significant bugs.

We've also been told, but cannot confirm, that every Xbox One unit can be converted to a debug console. Instead of specific hardware units, Microsoft can authorize a console ID to play pre-release code.

This is in line with information we've received about a new process for beta tests. They will be run via hardware provisioning on Xbox One, with the process reportedly to be enabled for up to 25,000 users per test at launch. Given the ability to provision for beta testing, the ability to enable retail hardware for pre-release code seems feasible.

"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that (developers) want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is, what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?"

This must have been what Kevin Dent was Tweeting about yesterday.

Microsoft did have the reorganizing and have different people in charge of Xbox, probably got some new ideas being thrown around.
I bet marketing and PR will be different moving forward too.

thekevindent ‏@TheKevinDent 12m From a code perspective, MSFT would have had to work on this for at least a couple of years. It should NOT be seen as following Sony
thekevindent ‏@TheKevinDent 11m As a game maker I am over the moon about the MSFT news, it doesn't lower the barrier of entry to make console games, it obliterates it.
thekevindent ‏@TheKevinDent 10m Remember that huge data center being mentioned by MSFT and the Unity deal? They never made sense to me, they make a ton of sense now.

Props to Dent. Looks like he was right. Obviously I dismissed him too quickly.

    Edit:

    Just saw this part....

We've also been told, but cannot confirm, that every Xbox One unit can be converted to a debug console. Instead of specific hardware units, Microsoft can authorize a console ID to play pre-release code.

    Now that is pretty awesome.

So technically everyone, but at the same time, not technically everyone (because of needing MS' permission)?

Just trying to clarify - put your pitchforks down.

Nice. Keep back pedaling. Wonder what else they are going to change/borrow from the competition before launch.

I don't really need a water cooler/remote control as of right now.

well, this is shaping up to be a completely different console than what was originally presented. I just may buy one now in the future.

They never presented anything about indie, so I'm not sure how its changed.
We all just assumed it was going to be the same as 360.

there are things that i would have liked to remain on XB1's initial plan. However, I believe their current views are going to sell to the average consumer better.

It still would have been nice tho for some of the features.

Got both systems on pre-order, so really all I care about at this point is Nov getting here

The only reversal I have seen is DRM, as the community asked for. Where is the laundry list of changes they made? Did I miss an announcement? I am only familiar with that one.

Isn't this self-publishing announcement a reversal of an original policy?

It funny when all some people can do is $#@! about Microsoft changing their policies for the better. It's like they are pissed at MS for giving them less and less to rake the Xbox One over with.

It's great to see them losing negative talking points.

Indeed. I am still amazed that the transparency displayed. I am reading more and more about this self publishing from Microsoft now. Holy crap, it is really pretty sweet how the improved their existing self publishing program. Now anyone can make a game on any Xbox One if they want, and self publish. How cool is $#@!ing that? I couldn't make a game for the life of me, so I won't be making one anytime soon, lol.

Looks like Microsoft wants to go from second place this gen to first place next gen.

It's sad that they had negative talking points to begin with. They should not have come out of the gate with the garbage they presented. I have never seen any company backpedal in such a way after revealing a product. I hope they pay dearly for what they tried to do to their fanbase.

I must have misunderstood then, I thought that there was a bit of noise about the fact that MS wouldnt allow indies to self-publish, was this never the case then?

Well I think it was implied since they didn't let the 360 do any of it. People just assumed MS wouldn't change that policy

I hope that wasnt aimed at me, I for one am glad they making the XBox One a more consumer friendly unit. Whilst I think it's an obvious thing to say from a business point of view, it also makes for better competition with both platforms on basically an even keel, in my opinion, can only be a good thing.
