    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...oftware-memory

UPDATE #2: Sony has issued a statement:

We would like to clear up a misunderstanding regarding our "direct" and "flexible" memory systems. The article states that "flexible" memory is borrowed from the OS, and must be returned when requested - that's not actually the case.

The actual true distinction is that:

"Direct Memory" is memory allocated under the traditional video game model, so the game controls all aspects of its allocation
"Flexible Memory" is memory managed by the PS4 OS on the game's behalf, and allows games to use some very nice FreeBSD virtual memory functionality. However this memory is 100 per cent the game's memory, and is never used by the OS, and as it is the game's memory it should be easy for every developer to use it.
We have no comment to make on the amount of memory reserved by the system or what it is used for.

good to hear from sony about this

    Nice find.

Some guys at b3d are stating 4.5 for games, 3 for os, and. 5 flexible.

Whatever it is it's fine. I'm not at all concerned about the games, I'm just curious as to what the hell that os doing at 3. Are their more features coming we don't know of?

With all the dedicated hardware taking care of background stuff this is confusing.

they're still evading the basic question of how much is reserved. im sure 7gb is not for games, it is lesser, otherwise they wouldve been clear and outspoken about it. 4.5 gb could be the 'direct memory' for games and another 512 mb flexible memory in case games needed it.

    that's probably what it is.

i think they're just reserving the amount...i don't think the OS takes up that much.

Has this cleared up anything? They are still not saying what the OS is using up?

well if the report is true (i haven't checked sources), then this at least confirms that the space is being reserved. or implies.

I agree. And with Sony charging for online play on PS4 I would assume they will want to make their OS more feature rich.

you can look at it that way but honestly i was ok with the basic features and then paying for dedicated servers. i really don't think i'd care about any features that come from this...not unless they're going to add some sort of teamspeak support...which we all know ain't going to happen.

i really can't think of anything i'd care for as a gamer. i was never a fan of PS3 not completely designed to be a gaming system.

Well whether we like it or not consoles that are solely a dedicated gaming machine are a thing of the past.

Still some numbers would be nice, but doubt we'll see anything this far out from launch. Technically we haven't seen anything official from either side on numbers and again won't get anything till after the launch...

If the increase in memory for the OS creates a more immersive experience, so be it. A whole lot of drama over nothing. These consoles can't come out fast enough; debate and banter over the games not possible specs on a console.

I don't think any game would ever use that much anyway. PC games don't.

Well, as much as it doesn't necessarily please me to hear this news, I will say that the important thing to remember is that no PS4 developers are complaining about the amount of memory that they have. Eventually, whatever it is they are waiting to do with this RAM will either come to light or a developer will make a good enough case for additional RAM that we will just end up getting it back.

Since neither is happening, what's important is that the system is still leaps and bounds better than any other game console.

Yeah because Sony come out and said we have 7gb available. 5GB of RAM is plenty enough. The 7gb comes from speculation, just like the 3gb over 3 OS for XBone. If they are worse than perceived then people set themselves up for failure. Don't put stock in specs until you see the final ironed out details. I don't know when people will ever learn this lesson and stop seting themselves up for disappointment. Not like this really affects gamers in any way. Just changes things for developers.

Subjective. I would say both consoles are closer than ever now.All those advantages PS4 had have pretty much vanished now. Unless MS has less RAM available for devs which I doubt.

I wouldn't say all. PS4 still has faster RAM and a better GPU.

Ok, we need to know what is taking up that space. If the XMB takes up 50mb i'd gladly have that again. 7.950GB for games awh yeah!

so did you believe that PS4 had advantages before this news?

apart from the fact the PS4 GPU is still 33% stronger then the XB1's?

the amount of RAM meant diddly squat, and its good to see those that praised that fact being brought back down to earth.

the speed of the RAM is of greater importance as both have similar RAM amounts. 8-8, 5-5, whichever, speed hasn't changed. PS4 RAM > XB1 RAM still.
