Sony and Panasonic are developing next-gen optical discs

    http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Pr...1307/13-0729E/

Tokyo, Japan - July 29, 2013 - Sony Corporation (‘Sony’) and Panasonic Corporation (‘Panasonic’) today announced that they have signed a basic agreement with the objective of jointly developing a next-generation standard for professional-use optical discs, with the objective of expanding their archive business for long-term digital data storage. Both companies aim to improve their development efficiency based on the technologies held by each respective company, and will target the development of an optical disc with recording capacity of at least 300GB by the end of 2015. Going forward, Sony and Panasonic will continue to hold discussions regarding the specifications and other items relating to the development of this new standard.

Hopefully devs will finally start to make use of the capacity now there's no DVD holding them back.

As long as this works with blu-ray players, I'll be fine with it. Otherwise, I won't be happy with having to buy another freaking "player".

Remember, we don't know for a fact what the Blu-ray drive in the PS4 is, other than it is BDR 6X. It looks more and more like it is a 100GB Blu-ray since that was about the closest to a high density Blu-ray with multiple layer medium that was close to a standard about two years ago. Research labs are going to be constantly looking for higher and higher density storage media, especially with this latest news about being able to stop light for 2 minutes in a crystal. This next-gen console generation isn't a 10 year console cycle. Nobody is saying it but they are 5 year consoles. PS3 is pushing dual layer now with 50GB Blu-ray, so that is another indicator the PS4 will have a 100GB triple or quad layer Blu-ray.

Considering this is for archive purposes, I don't think they will be regular discs but ones like the PSP's UMD, disc inside a case.

yea i really hope it is going to work with current players but doubt it.

my question is: will physical formats survive?

Actually, I take back what I said earlier. This will be for professional use. This will be nothing like a BluRay drive and likely more for mass storage of some kind.

That's possible, but many moons ago I remember CD's starting off in caddies as well!
