Native 4K gaming on xb1 confirmed. PS4 no native 4K

    http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/23/435...olution-and-3d

The next-gen Xbox One will include support for ultra high-resolution 4K as well as 3D, Microsoft's Larry Hryb revealed in a Yahoo chat session yesterday.

"Xbox One supports both 3-D and 4K," Hryb said in response to a question about the console including these features.

Following the Xbox One's unveiling on Tuesday, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi told Forbes the console's video and interface will work with HDTVs.

"The video and interface portions [will work with next-gen TVs], absolutely," he said. "Games developed for 1080p will run at 1080p, obviously."

XBOX ONE SUPPORTS BOTH 3D AND 4K, INCLUDING 4K FOR BLU-RAY

Mehdi also revealed the console will support 4K for Blu-ray at launch, with the possibility of games and other content being available at 4K in the future if they are rendered at that resolution.

"There's no hardware restriction there at all," he said.

4K, also known as Ultra HD, refers to a display resolution approximately four times the resolution of 1080p displays. Several companies, such as Sony and LG, have started to manufacture TVs with the emerging standard, though the price point can begin at tens of thousands of dollars here in the technology's early days.

File size may be another technological hurdle to 4K adoption: Sony said in February that 4K videos could require downloads over 100 GB. Neil Hunt, Netflix's chief product officer, told The Verge earlier this year that the streaming video service expects to offer 4K video content "within a year or two."

After revealing the PlayStation 4 in February, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told Polygon the company's next-generation console would support 4K output, but not for playing games.

"The official answer is that the PS4 supports 4K output but for personal contents, like photos or videos. Not games," Yoshida said. "PS4 games do not work on 4K."

Update: A representative from Microsoft confirmed to Polygon that Xbox One games will support both native 4K resolution and upscaling to 4K.

Says PS4 does not support 4k for games. Remember the 1080p PR out of Sony for ps3? Replace full hd for ultra hd and Sony for MS and you got yourself the same kind of PR bull$#@! going on.

Also, last gen 360 "didn't" support 1080p and it changed down the road. I believe we will see the same 4k "support" from Sony with a later fw update.

Lets not all forget that the PS3 "didnt" have a scaler chip either so SD content "couldnt" upscale

Neither system has a fillrate for 4K of any great use.
    BIOSHOCK in 4K, nah.
SONIC in 4K at maybe 30fps is doable.
    DDR in 4K perfectly doable!
    MYST in 4K, no prob!
The Obligatory Dragon's Lair in 4K, absolutely.

I would rather play games with at least 30 FPS, not 2. Whether it supports it natively or not really isn't the point. There aren't any games that will utilize 4K with anything complicated going on. Maybe a super awesome reboot of Pong or something.

Also, the price of 4K TVs will remain absurdly high for at least a few years. Much like plasma TVs were 10-14k when they first came out. At least they're not 25k anymore. >_>

For the graphics $#@!s If a game is rendered at 4K it will not look anywhere near as good as the 1080p games.

According to this a single GTX Titan gets 13 FPS in sleeping dogs @ 4k using max settings

Cool. Great for the one-upsmanship type of fans I suppose.

Not feasible at all for games this gen.

Meaningless. Best case you might get 4k arcade games. This is the 1080p generation. 4K+ gaming will come with the next console generation.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. They can't even come close to maximizing the image fidelity on 1080p w/ the HW, WTF would I care about the natively putting out 4K for games. Add to that I don't sit with my face against a 4K screen (ok, I sit 10.5' back from a 64" 1080p Plasma) and at my seating distance to even possibly start getting the advantage of a 4K TV I'd need a TV that doesn't fit in my Room. Hell I'm still haven't reached the peak of 1080p, I'd need an 80" TV for that.

Anyway, I'd rather keep it 1080p60 and best fidelity out there and let a TV do the scaling and not try to overextend the game resolution and by doing so weaken the graphic fidelity.

At this point I have no intention on moving to a 4K TV for two reasons.
1.) Nothing broadcast wise supports it, and we're a long way away from streaming supporting it.
2.) When streaming does support it, it will almost guaranteed to be $#@!tier than 1080p on BluRay or Cable TV provided.
3.) I seriously doubt my wife is going to let me get a TV large enough that I'm actually going to take advantage of the increased resolution. We're talking > 80" just to start to be able to notice a difference between 1080p and a higher resolution for my seating distance.

Kind of funny regarding the trend on smartphones and computer displays.

not going to buy a 4K HD tv anyway. so who really cares besides someone who maybe... you know... has waaaay too much disposable income and wants to flaunt their E-peen? i see no real reason to play a video game in 4K resolutions. a movie? perhaps. (which, by the way, PS4 is COMFIRMED to be able to do.) there would be no reason that they couldn't support 4K resolution games in the future. (honestly, if the PS3 was revealed as being able to play 3D movies and games in 2006, would you have believed sony?) i would play the "wait and see" game on this one to see the viable routes it could take. still, i'm not going to shell out the money for a 4K screen. absolutely ridiculous right now.

EDIT: not to mention, the added expenses of programming the game in 4K resolutions would give publishers and developers another reason to raise the prices of the video games themselves. really, has anyone pointed out that possible outcome from the resolution hike?

point proven. if i cant find a 42" 4K screen for $200 or less, i wont buy it simply because a 1080P screen at that size is much more affordable :P not shelling out the money for it. its my personal opinion on the matter. im just getting fed up with the $#@! waving that is the console wars right now. saying the ps4 is completely incapable of playing games at 4K resolutions is like saying the original 360 wouldnt cook an egg. just because it wasn't supposed to do that out of the box doesnt mean it isn't going to later on down the road. in all honesty, the resolution being increased would make cost rise for the developers. that rise, translates to more expensive X-One games and PS4 games alike. i would rather see the cost of games to the consumer drop, instead of rise. i'm just trying to keep my eyes on other parts of the overall topic here afterall. if i said something absolutely insane, please, inform me to wear a duck on my head and whistle "One headlight" from the wallflowers backwards.

EDIT: honestly though, good picture. the guy on the right totally has this...

its a 42" toshiba tv i cant remember the exact model though. remember how i said you gotta look for the right deals? well, last year, sale two days before black friday. if the tv i had before wasn't a tube tv, i wouldnt have looked at it. i got the two day old floor model because they sold out of the rest. still had the box and everything. before i bought it i made sure to look at the reviews and made sure the vast majority were reviews 4 stars and above. just saying, if its the right price, i'll snag it up.

EDIT: (also, i hate editing SO friggin much xP bad habbit really.) but yeah, regarding my log in date, BIIIG time lurker lol. for a good chunk of time, only my browser remembered my login password lol.
