Sony Grabs Lead in Race for Internet Pay TV

Sony Corp. has reached a preliminary agreement with Viacom Inc. to carry the media company's cable channels on its planned Internet-based TV service, a person familiar with the matter said, a significant boost for the Japanese company as it races to secure content rights against technology firms vying to offer similar services.Sony plans to stream traditional cable channels, as well as on-demand content, over the Internet, posing new competition for cable, satellite and phone companies which have long sold subscription TV services.Sony must still finalize details of its preliminary deal with Viacom, the person says. Sony also has had discussions with major programmers including Walt Disney Co. Time Warner Inc. CBS Corp., people familiar with the situation say. The status of those talks isn't clear.A person familiar with the matter said Sony is hoping to*launch its online pay TV service by the end of the year. Initially, at least, the service is expected to be available via Sony's PlayStation gaming console*- a new edition of which could be released soon - as well as "Bravia" high-definition TVs, but later will also work on other Sony devices including tablets and smartphones, the person said.search title through google if you cannot access article because of not being a subscriber and click through that way

Lol who needs a stinking cable box bypass. Hmm I seem to recall telling someone that they were delusional if they thought Sony was not going to have some sort of tv app. Low and behold iptv! I would have thought ms would go this route, well played Sony

By the way, I don't really care about this, rarely watch tv sooo...

Good news if this pay TV is not behind a paywall, and you just pay for the tv service.

That will depend on the financial details of the deal. That service might end up behind the paywall.

I like to think that it will not. See youtube, Netflix, free to play games. IPTV should have its own subscription.

I hope they do a similar deal with UK broadcasters such as sky, virgin and BT for their premiere league coverage at least. PS3 already delivers BBC iplayer, 4od, ITV player, Netflix, youtube and Lovefilm.

The SkyGo app on the 360 is pretty good and I have watched a lot of games over the last couple of years on it. Obviously this links to your Sky sub so no additional cost would need to be implemented by Sony.

I just hope Sky isnt in bed with MS over this.

I've not tried. but I'm sure I read that sky go, works on PS3. don't know if there is an app or if you need to go through the browser.

As much as I would love for this to come to the US, I doubt it will. The cable providers have a strangle hold on TV here. I'd even settle for being able to subscribe to HBO/Max and such without all the other junk but outside of a little hope from a survey I took part in, I doubt that will happen any time soon.

Judging from every other feature Sony is introducing, I have no reason to believe it would be behind the paywall.

I think these groups or cable providers are different to how it works in the uk.
hopefully sony can work a deal with sky and bt, instead of individual channels. But i dont understand how? Only if they do a deal together, which im sure is what Microsoft has to do for xbox one to work here.
id pay to watch american tv for sure

Interesting idea. Not really something for me to get excited about because I don't have the type of internet to ruin something like this. But it is a cool idea.

The difference is that their conference didn't mainly talk about TV like MS did with theirs. So While they continue their main focus on games they can still add other stuff in such as TV features and whatnot.

There's a Sky Movies app on PS3 that gives you access to Sky's Live Movie channels or On-demand Movie library, its free for a month if you sign up to Plus.

Nah, won't be behind a paywall other than it's own subscription.

Sony is awesome like that, paywall should be there for services that require an active sony presence, like online gaming.

The $#@! MS is pulling is appalling, I have no idea why there user base is standing by them. Example, buying an xbone with hardware inside capable of recording your gaming activity and saving it. Then having to pay again just to use that feature? No thanks.

Paying a company like netflix 10 bux a month to watch TV from there service, using your own internet to download those streams, and paying MS for.... being the middle man? :S No thanks.

It doesn't bother me one bit. I'm not surprised at all that they are gong this route. They know this stuff is good business whether they like to talk about it or not. They want that money too. I say get go get it because they will need it.

MS already provides cable TV services to XBOX 360 in Australia they have the upper hand because they have FOX and Telstra behind them sony has no chance in Australia not against MS and Apple
