[DEBUNKED-OP updated]You can't install a disk version onto HDD. Opinions?

    Yoshida speaks:

Normally most of us will buy disk versions. So why do we need 500GB internal disks when we can't install a thing there...

What about the noise and speed of the blyray drive?

    EDIT:
Sony/Shuhei Yoshida just confirmed that you CAN indeed install disc based games:

If you want to install your games.. why would you buy the disk? I mean, wouldnt that defeat the purpose of it?

yeah... if you own a disk why would do want that. Just get up and swap.

If they allowed this, and you could play without the disk. LOL. Do you know how much $#@! it would stir with rental services, friendship loans, store returns etc. They would sell less than half of the amount of games

digital versions, f2p games, indie games. 500gb is not so many as it seems.

    Hi,
I have X360 and I can either play from the DVD disk or install into the HDD and play from the HDD (with DVD inserted of course for verification that I own the game).

I just was surprised that PS4 won't have that options which is obviously a step back.

I don't want to install and play without a disk. I want to: install and play from HDD while bluray is in the tray.

    Why?
Because #1: Loading from HDD I believe is faster than from optical media
Because #2: HDD generates less noise than optical drives

So basically if I don't want to collect blue plastic boxes and don't plan to share/trade the games, digital downloads are the way to go on with the next gen. Right?

AH, a 360 user. Yeah I could see that as being a step back to you, though to PS3 players its the same old. (Drive in PS4 is faster so hopefully no more mandatory partial installs)

FYI, PS3 drive is fairly quiet so no need to worry about that.

    On the PS4, yes.

On the Xbox One, Im pretty sure all games - no matter if digital or disk - must be installed to the hard drive to play. Though not sure if thats been reversed since.

Think we need more clarification as it goes against what Cerny has said previously about PlayGo.

    http://www.vg247.com/2013/04/24/ps4s...ys-mark-cerny/

That said PlayGo was never properly detailed and the actual functionality may be similar to how Uncharted/GoW/LoU works where it never installs the entire game only portions in a stream like manner which eliminates load times.

Ps4 will still have installs and they will be fairly large this generation as well. That 500gb will be used in good time.

Hence the reason why I'm going Digital only for the 8th Generation of video games its convenient and hassle free.

Install and have the disc present for the check. Easy.

The hdd size is for DLC, PS Store downloads (games, demos), patches, etc.

I think you can improve the load times. Can be useful for games like skyrim which can have a few.

Don't forget game PVR. While streaming is just streaming. Recording 15mins of game footage a few times will likely chew up space unless they have some wicked compression software.

Exactly. That's one of the things I hated about the XBone which is being forced to install games although I'm not longer sure if that's happening but just seems retarded to me as why would I want to buy a physical bluray disc game and install it? If I want to save myself the hassle of handling the disc then I'd be better off buying the digital version.

Yeah installing does improve load times. I'm sure it is also less likely to freeze that way as well. But I'm not really disappointed in any way. I didn't really expect them to do this anyway.

Taking a WILD GUESS HERE and saying it's probably UP TO THE DEVELOPER to decide whether you'll be able to or not.

Yoshida is probably refering to installing the whole game and playing without the disc. <- Therein lies the reason.

There are still digital only games that don't release to disk. And last I checked, the disk still had to be in the drive. Besides, we went a whole gen with how many multi disk Blu-ray games? It will probably be later in the gen if every that we start seeing those this time around.

Its probably going to be like the current gen PS3, where you can install a large portion of the game to the HDD to improve load times, etc. but not the whole game because you could just rent/borrow/etc and just install and have the game forever, which would be reallly bad for sales of games

But how would that work for the digital versions? If you download the game and have it installed entirely on the hard drive there is no disc stream right?

Normally you have disc + HDD streaming assets when you do a partial install on PS3. With PS4 you'd have only HDD.. Won't that hurt load times?

Yes but if that was what concerned you, wouldnt you just buy the digital version? Im going to assume most, if not all, PS4 games will be on the PSN store as well.
