Microsoft exec clarifies: “We have real, retail consoles running real code”

Some games journalists were concerned that most games shown at Gamescom were not running on the actual retail hardware, but with three months to go before launch that is pretty much a non-issue.Microsoft director of product planning, Albert Penello, revealed that just about everything on the Xbox One is running on final hardware. Developers usually use dev kits or development PCs to showcase their unfinished games, and here’s what Penello had to say about games demoed at E3.
At E3, you saw Xbox One games running in a couple of environments:
Development PC’s (these were our early Alpha kits spec’d similarly to HW targets)
Development Kits (these are the white and black consoles that look like retail units)
Other PC’s (in these cases, like the drama around the PC with the nvidia GPU), we asked developers to make sure what they were showing was reflective of what could be achieved on Xbox One.
He also added that the Xbox One dev kits do not have 12GB RAM contrary to rumours, and they are just 8GB like the retail units.“At this point, just about everything is running on “near final” Hardware. What’s unique about our program this time is that Dev Kits and Retail Kits are exactly the same,” he revealed on GAF. ”Despite the belief, our Dev Kits DO NOT have 12gb of ram. They have 8gb, just like shipping units. So anything you see running on a black Xbox One console is the same unit we’re going to ship.“You have many, many units that are run on the factory production line before final product starts as you’re testing quality, tweaking the manufacturing process, etc. But all these consoles you’re seeing are coming off factory production lines. That’s why I caveat “near final” because, before you start full production, you go through many test runs.”Finally he revealed that people were able to demo the hardware at Gamescom.“So again to clarify – we have real, retail consoles running real code. Every time you see a black box running software, it’s the real thing. I had almost 300 people see the dash demo at Gamescom, and people were free to inspect the HW I was demoing on.”

Well that debunks even more false rumors. Nice to know and nice to see MS finally doing damage control.

I never heard anyone in any forum so far talk about that. The only thing people made a big deal about was the E3 showings from Microsoft.

That statement was retracted or clarified. http://www.gamepur.com/news/11885-so...-hands-sa.html and http://n4g.com/news/1342269/scott-lo...s-and-hand-ons Both companies are launching soon so I cant see either one not having this sorted.

err, where did he retract it? He was still saying they aren't in retail boxes. But yeah, you'd be thinking they have this sorted, Sony are known for making sure things are cool.

But he did say they were actual PS4 devkits not some PC running Nvidia Titan cards like that article said about X1 at E3. I think thats more likely what MS is responding to.

Well getting these "devkits" in "retail boxes" in time for launch wont be a problem for either company imo. Hurry up November! lol

I wouldn't think so, XBO has a huge amount of space and Sony are experts at thermals.

Okay guys, regardless of all this; either console will not be delayed (in Tier 1 countries at least) past this year. They'll be here in November.

Sony wouldn't have announced a release date otherwise. You just don't do that. Either way, I'll be playing with my "empty box I'll break in half" come the 29th Nov.

    #IndieStation4 and proud of it.

Penello contradicts himself in his explanation.

    First he says:

"At this point, just about everything is running on “near final” Hardware."

    Then he says:

"So again to clarify – we have real, retail consoles running real code."

"near final hardware" is not "retail". Near final hardware is pre-production prototype and not anywhere near retail. He also says pre-production units off production lines are production units. This is gibberish. The words pre-production and production mean two different things. One is unfinished and the other is finished. It's very odd how much effort MS is putting into this PR effort and how their explanations only become more garbled.

I still can't figure out why this matters to people. It was gonna be running on the hardware at some point. Dumbest debate ever!

And yet, a MS product director is involved and at the center of it.

Nah.... people were talking about games running on PCs and Nvidia cards long before this guy was chiming in on it. It was just as dumb then too.

Well if people that don't like the Xbox One can still find a reason to post in this section, I can certainly come in a thread and call it's subject matter dumb.

While I agree they're in a Pre-production/Beta stage and they're preparing for a production ramp, they're not there until they submit for FCC approval. But w/ less demand based on pre-order numbers and dropping markets until 2014 they can afford to start production later (but how much later can the afford?)

The remarks regarding running on PC's instead of Dev kits goes back to E3, which Penello even states that they had stuff running on everything from Higher end Dev Kits to Higher performance PCs. The point here was what developers are currently showing stuff running on - which when reading between the line is Pre-production units. This is similar to what the games for PS4 where running on at E3 (Pre-production PS4's.)

It's obvious that MS is a little behind here, but they've still got time - but it's running out. If they don't have the XB1 submitted to FCC in the next couple of weeks then I think they will be seriously be risking their November Launch window.
