Need help with an internet connection / router issue.

So I go over to my mothers house and she has this weird problem with her PC. Her main computer that is connected to the router won't connect to the internet. But everything else from her laptop, rokku box, iPad, etc etc they all connect just fine through her router.

Can anyone figure out this problem because I'm stumped as to why her main computer won't connect? It was working just fine and then all of a sudden like 5 minutes after using the internet it stopped connecting to the internet.

I'm assuming it is a wired connection to the router. Is that right?

    If windows computer, do this...

    1. Click Start and then Run.
    2. Type cmd and then hit enter
    3. Type ipconfig and hit enter
    4. Look for IPv4 address and Default Gateway
    5. IP address should be similar to Default Gateway. If Gateway is 192.1.1.1 then your IP should be 192.1.1.x.
    6. Type ping and then your gateway IP. example: ping 192.1.1.1. Should get four reply from messages.
    7. Type ipconfig /renew and read the results.

If you don't get the reply messages then I would first try a different ethernet cable.

Has this computer connected in the past and just stopped working?

yea. It's really weird. A few other times it would just stop working and after a day or 2 it would start working again.

Ugh..intermittent connections are harder to troubleshoot than no connection.

the ipconfig doesn't bring up anything at all. I went into run....typed cmd, then I typed ipconfig and all it says is Windows IP configuration.

    At command prompt type devmgmt.msc

Under Network adapters, what devices listed.
Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

it almost seems like she might have deleted something she shouldn't have. mind you, my mother is old and isn't even 1% computer smart. She just plays mini games like these granny games she buys. LOL but when I go into network settings all there is, is a 1394 icon but that's it. It's almost like something is missing

Wow. Yeah, you're network adapter is gone. I would find the network adapter driver from the computer manufacturer's website and try to reinstall it. If that doesn't work, could be your adapter has gone bad. Is this a desktop or laptop?

desktop and it's hooked up with a wired connection, it's not wireless since it's the main computer.

how do I get a network adapter on there if it can't connect to the internet o.O. oh my god do I hate her freaking computer man. I built mine but she bought from some guy that bought it from best buy so there is no XP CD and yes it's windows XP. LOL

I told her, it's time for a new computer for the love of god.

Scroll down to LAN. No idea which driver is yours though. Looks like there is a utility at the top of the page to detect hardware.

Need to know the hardware on your system to choose the right driver?

would it work if I just reformatted the computer? It really needs it anyway.

evidently she decided to run to the store and pick up windows 7 I guess.

No way to tell for sure if it is a hardware or software issue. But if it needs to be formatted anyway....why not?

Well, get this.... just got off the phone with her just now and she wants me to go to my house, get the parts online, and to build her an actual gaming rig. Get this man....65 year old mother that wants a $1100 gaming rig. O.o I'm baffled, completely baffled.

but this problem right now those is a straight nightmare. I've been that this crappy PC for over 8 hours total and even the driver list is confusing the crap out of me. son of a $#@!.

Is the network adapter a card or built into the motherboard? If it is a card, try removing it putting it back in. Shut down first, of course.

Got it fixed man. It was a bad ethernet thing on the mobo. So I went out and found a place that sold ethernet cards and now it's back online for her. Thanks for the help.
