Microsoft turned down Heavy Rain over child kidnapping story

Heavy Rain was turned down by Microsoft due to its child kidnapping story, it has been revealed.

Speaking at this year's BAFTA annual games lecture, Quantic Dream's head of development David Cage said the publisher was "scared" of the controversy it could cause.

"We were pitching Heavy Rain to different publishers, including Sony, and we went to Microsoft," he told attendees including Digital Spy. "We had a very long talk and they loved Fahrenheit, and they really wanted to do something with us.

"They got scared by the fact that Heavy Rain was about kids being kidnapped, and they said, 'This is an issue, we want to change it'. Well, we could have kidnapped cats, it would be a different experience!

"For me, that was a very interesting signal. It was like, you know what, I don't think we can work together, because you don't understand what I'm to achieve here.

I don't get how that would be an issue. It's a rated M game for a reason. I've seen TV shows and movies show more brutality towards children than this game. I swear that when it comes to movies, it's fine and dandy. When it's a game doing it, everyone $#@!s all over themselves.

Heavy Rain probably would have failed to gain an audience on the 360.

I agree, Heavy Rain is the best PS3 game. If what the dev says is true, MS $#@!ed up. It would have done well on the 360.

Obviously they didn't want to be connected to a game that made kids go out and kidnap people.

Understood, but looking at end results maybe that wasn't the best idea at that point, but I kind of hate how every article against MS makes them into some kind of villain.

Man, I'm so glad Microsoft is afraid to take chances and get behind something unique and evolutionary in terms of games evolving.
If MS hadn't turned them down, we might be seeing Beyond 2 Souls coming to 360 in a few weeks.

The game quality would of got watered down if it came to xbox 360.Glad to see people like David Cage who has passion in what he does.

This is why Sony will always be better than MS when it comes to publishing games. Glad they did turn it down, because it would have flopped on the Xbox like Alan Wake.
