Xbox 360 to be supported through 2016 - 100 more games coming

11 years is a pretty good run. I wouldn't expect anything more from a console.

BTW, we ALL know why MS had no choice but to stop production on the original Xbox so let's keep this topic centered on the 360. I'm sure the mods will be interested in anything that moves this thread off of the 360.

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/09/...-100-new-games

Microsoft has announced that it will support the Xbox 360 for three more years before phasing it out in 2016.

Eurogamer reports that Xbox chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi explained at the Citi Global Technology Conference yesterday that the eight year-old console could expect to see over 100 new games before that time comes, however.

"You've seen us over the years constantly be focused on profitability and improving year over year," he said. "There are different points in the cycle of when you invest in new hardware.

"Some of these things take some time in the launch year in which you invest, and then they they play out over time."
Mehdi was adamant that the launch of the Xbox One wouldn't have a negative impact on the Xbox 360, insisting the two can and will co-exist happily until 2016 with over 100 new games coming to the older console.

"We're going to continue to invest in Xbox 360, and the two devices can work in concert," he said. "So it's not like the day we ship Xbox One your 360 won't work. We'll continue to support it."If this comes to pass, it'll mean the Xbox 360 will have had an incredible 11 year life cycle, seeing as it launched in November 2005.

What do you reckon, are you sad to hear Microsoft will stop supporting the Xbox 360 in three years or do you expect most people will have made the leap to next-gen by then? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Not surprising. The 360 has almost 80 million users. And like the op stated MS had no choice but to dump the OG Xbox. So yeah, it makes sense.

11 years is decent times, hell some people still use windows XP

I must be one of the few that do not know why MS stopped the Xbox 1. And searching for it only brings up the new Xbox 1.

Complications with the deal with Nvidia making it difficult to lower the price of the Xbox, think theres other things as well though.

Then why the XBOX ONE then

True to those that might support one console... But defeats the purpose of having next gen, when you can play most games on current consoles.. And all you are really buying is the graphics

There seems to be some negativity about MS doing this. The odd thing is that people pointed out how great Sony was for doing this with the PS2.

Dont see how anybody can realistically view this as a negative. I think its awesome that MS is doing this. Its one of the things I like about Sony. And besides that theres 80 million users each for 360 and PS3. Money on the table.

My own words were just to keep things on topic. I've been here long enough to know how quickly things can get off topic.

Aside from that, it's my bad. I went back and I incorrectly read some of the posts. I was wrong.

It's kind of impossible to discuss this without going into the past, because this is significant only in its relationship with the past. So... Good going, Microsoft. Doing the right thing.
