    Models impacted by YLOD

So my original 60gb got the yellow light of death for the 4th time. So instead of getting it fixed, again, I wanna replace it. Someone is selling an 80gb for $100 but I'm not sure I want to get another Fat model if it's likely/possible for it to YLOD too. What versions of PS3 tend to be most effected by YLOD?

Ok, lets try this approach. Does anyone what problems, if any, tend to effect slim and super slim models compared to the phat PS3?

Just don't buy any model of the phat unless its a 60GB and unless you care about BC. Go for the latest slim for most reliability for the smallest and least power consumption parts. Don't buy used hardware either because a lot of people trade them in when they know they're about to break.

HDD. So if you're thinking of selling it as broken on ebay then remove it and format it first.

Well that's in line with what I was thinking. I have a 2nd slim PS3 some I'm not necessarily under the gun to get a new one, persay, but I do like having a 2nd one to take with my ro friend's houses and game night and stuff. I'm willing to go with a used unit I just don't want to spend much more than $100 with the PS4 being so close. That said I also don't want to get a model that's likely to have the same flaw as the one I already have.

In that case see if you can find a used 12GB Super Slim (ideal for carry around to a friends' etc.). Dunno if you'll one already though since they've just released or about to be released in the US. If you do find one used though you can be sure it's been hardly used lol

my launch 60gb PS3 got the YLOD right around the time the first PS3 slim was being introduced (2009). I had researched a lot and came to the conclusion that the YLOD mainly affected 60gb PS3's and the first batch of slims which is why i opted for the 80gb Fat Ps3, the last iteration of the Fat Ps3's. It's been 4 years and it's still going strong, only makes sense that after 3 years of building the Fat Ps3's any and all issues had been fixed and when the redesigned slim came out problem arose again.

If you still own a fat ps3 60gb like me you will need to do 6 things that will assure you will not get ylod anytime soon #1 replace thermal paste with either arctic silver 5 or arctic mx4. #2 replace thermal pads, #3 if yours has the 15 blade fan upgrade to a 19 blade fan . #4 buy an evercool defender turbo external cooling fan. (yes it really works and works well might i add) #5 while its apart and the bottom of your case is off. do the x flow mod. just drilling holes in the bottom of your case where the fan blades are. not in the middle where motor is. #6 if you did the x flow mod get some risers that stick to the bottom of your ps3 to rise it up a good inch or 2. brings it alot more air. this does work to help keep temps down and more cfm's of air moving through your system ( all fat models are prone to ylod as sony used crap thermal pads and paste and didnt compensate for how much heat the gpu actually produced. x flow mod in pic x flow mod.jpg

Agreed. I think most fat are prone to this issue. No reason to get it unless you want backwards compatibility or card readers. definitely do not get a used one. I just blew cash on one thinking I could put my working drive in one with a broken drive and I can't b/c there is a deeper issue than a broken drive (board marriage or something)
