Are you willing to pay a subscription for a game on PS4?

We were all a little shocked when The Elder Scrolls Online was revealed to adopt a sub-based instead of a free-to-play model.

The PS4 will start life with games like War Thunder and PlanetSide 2 which will be free-to-play. The question is: are you still willing to pay a subscription for a franchise you love?

Personally, I vote no. The days have gone when I used to subscribe and spend every evening on the same game. There's so much choice now that I spread my game playing time across numerous games of numerous genres. I have no desire to pay extra. However, I will dip into free-to-play games. If DUST, for example, would have adopted a sub model I would never have played it. As it was FTP, I jumped in and loved it. I can then choose if I want to spend extra money via micro-transactions. Having 30 days free play on sub-based games is not enough time to make a decision on whether I want to spend money on a game in the long term.

I voted no, and that is simply because I never devote enough time to a single game to warrant the idea. WoW was the only game I willingly paid a subscription for (back in my college days when I had LOADS of free time). Nowadays consoles offer a steady stream of new game releases and based on this my ability to spend months on a single game is a difficult task.

Though the The Elder Scrolls Online does indeed peak my interests, that's for sure. Damn I love those games.

    10 years and counting!

If the game offers enough to warrant the price of a sub then yeah.

I voted yes. I don't use things like Netflix or other apps that have a sub fee so I don't see an issue with it. However, I will only have one sub, and that will be for FFXIV.

I never ever thought that I would pay a monthly sub for a game but at the end of the day it is more a matter of whether or not a person sees value in that or not. I will pay €11 a month for FF--A bigmac combo from McDonalds costs me about €7 and ends up in the toilet the next morning...so it's all relative to me. People will always find ways to part with their money but we justify it differently. I am starting to appreciate persistence in games over the transient nature of most stand alone titles and I love FFXIV and have no issue parting with that fee. Saying no on principle could rob you of an awesome gaming world and all it would really cost you is one less trip to McDs a month.

No, I don't spend that much time on one single game that it would be something for me.

No.. I refuse to buy a game that is absolutely worthless unless I spend an additional $15 a month. Its the equivalent as saying here you can borrow my game as long as you pay me. Once you quit paying im taking my game back and all you have to show for it is a digital save data woohoo. Not really. I would love to play ff14 and eso but I will not pay subscription and because of wow it has become almost yhe "standard" model. If I had no job and no life then MAYBE I would as I would get a lot more value but I wouldnt be able to afford it now would I?

It would have to offer new content every month AND be a reasonable price.

I would be tempted for Elder Scrolls Online but as a general rule no.

For me it depends on what kind of experience I'm getting out of it. Personally though I feel like the subscription model is antiquated and archaic. I like free to play models with optional subscriptions, however the free to play model needs to be really generous.

I dont even play subscription games on PC.
I wait until they go Free-to-Play, which almost every one I wanted to play did.

I chose the third option. It would have to be a game of personal significance to me to warrant a subscription. For example, I will buy and subscribe to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn because I love the franchise. To the contrary, I like the Elder Scrolls series but, even if Online turns out to be really great, I'll pass as I could take or leave the games.

I think Elder Scrolls Online will end up as F2P because I dont see the subscription model flying on consoles when youre already paying just to play online.

I can't commit to one game enough to make sense of paying a periodic fee to play it. However, if it's 1) super cheap, or 2) additional perks, then it might make sense for me to subscribe to play a game.

I love Elder Scrolls, but it would have to have some incredible stuff for me to pay a monthly fee.

I've only paid for one sub game my entire life. That was WoW. It's not something I like to do. I'm more of a fan of the F2P model, if done correctly. Not the F2P where you can only really progress by spending lots of money on micro transactions. Sub based games are few and far between now compared to what they were 5 years ago. Honestly unless a game just completely blows me away, i doubt I will be spending money on that any time soon.

Games that charge a sub should be a free download with a trial of 2 weeks max then after that you pay the sub. And the disc version you buy for full price should give you at least 6 months subscription.

I'm not willing to pay . Considering we now have to pay to play online, that should be enough.

No. I've never invested in an MMO as I believe that once you make an initial game purchase you should have full access to said game, period. A subscription model is the gaming equivalent of a gym membership and I don't ever want my gaming experiences to become a chore - that's not why I game. Likewise, your value for money becomes dependent on time, which can't be bought; many gamers simply don't have the wealth of time necessary to justify a subscription.
