Spec Ops: The Line - A Hidden Masterpiece

Having recently signed up for Playstation Plus, I was randomly browsing the store to see what interesting games I could download. In doing so, I stumbled over Spec Ops: The Line, of which I had previously played the demo that left much to be desired - or so I thought. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a go and download it anyway.

    Best.Decision.Ever.

Seriously, this game has totally caught me by surprise and is right up there with my favorite games of this generation. The gameplay itself is pretty average with standard third-person shooting mechanics and somewhat clunky controls. It is, however, fun and challenging.

Now for the important part: What really stands out is the narrative. It portrays the plot in such an immersive manner that I simply couldn't put down the controller. Everything from the very graphic tone of the game's setting to the brilliant and haunting soundtrack is astonishing - not to forget the utterly impressive script of the protagonists. It is a very cinematic experience. The plot itself is also very well done with great pacing and unexpected turns and events that will make you speechless at times.

What impressed me the most is how the developers intentionally critiqued the typical 'fake reality' of modern shooters: More often than not, you find yourself in the shoes of an honorable soldier that seems to be the world's last true savior. Not so in Spec Ops: Here, you will aggressively be reminded of what horrors await in war and how there is no such thing as a saint. On the contrary, you will feel terrible for your actions right up to the shocking conclusion. As such, the overall story is amazing with its highly psychological themes. Ultimately, Spec Ops: The Line is for shooters what Silent Hill 2 was for the survival horror genre, if you know what I mean.

I don't want to spoil this masterpiece so I urge anyone with a PS+ membership to download this hidden gem NOW. It will suck you in its world like few other games do.

If anything, watch this already gripping trailer to get an idea of things:

I DL'ed it originally just cause it was free and never tried it out for a while. Once I did, mind=blown and that was just for the voice actors alone. Nathan Drake (Uncharted), Captain Sheridan (Babylon 5) and Ace Levy (Starship Troopers), definitely worth the price. One of the top games of 2012.

Spec Ops: The Line - A Hidden Masterpiece

    Completely agree about Spec Ops.
Also grabbed it off PS+ and its been the first game in a long while to keep me hooked and wanting to get back on it while I've been away from it. I must have been thinking about the story for hours after I'd finished it because there's so many possibilities around what's happening and why it's happening as well as the alternate endings. There's some good videos on YouTube as well of peoples thoughts on the story which were an interesting watch as well. I also highly recommend

Absolutely! This was definitely one of the best hidden gems this generation. The combat is nothing special but the story is very intense! I loved every minute of it and I'm glad I went for the platinum on it. Got to see so much stuff missed the first time around. Anyone contemplating should definitely give it a shot.

The gameplay is supposedly a parody of the modern shooter. The game was great though, came out of nowhere.

Very cool game. I voted it as my favorite shooter of the year. Plus it's probably as close to an "Apocalypse Now" videogame as we're likely to see.

    Shut up and play games

I think it's one of the more overrated games tbh. Not to say it was bad. Just that it's been labelled similar to the hyperbole of "Citizen Kane of gaming". The whole introspective of "making you look inwards" at your actions as a bit overblown.

Gameplay mechanics are average, and the story is controversial/topical enough, albeit done just right, to warrant the attention.

Again not knocking it. Just saying that maybe those hyping it as a 15/10, it's probably closer to a 7/10.

    #IndieStation4 and proud of it.
