[Nintendo 3DS] Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

After a month-long delay in the states, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, AlphaDream's fourth installment of the Mario & Luigi series of role-playing games and one of this year's video games from Nintendo celebrating Luigi's 30th anniversary, is finally available for Nintendo 3DS owners to enjoy [on August 11th]. Having not played any of the previous titles in the series, I was excited to see what kind of adventure awaited the world-renowned Italian plumbers.

In Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, we see Mario, his brother Luigi, Princess Peach, Toadsworth and some Toads make their way to Pi'illow Island by way of a blimp, courtesy of Dr. Snoozemore who is interested in the science of sleep. That said, the game largely consists of you controlling both Mario & Luigi, exploring the many locations of Pi'illow Island as well as jumping through Dream Portals that pop up immediately after Luigi falls asleep.

Interestingly, the game will change from a 3D perspective to 2D as the player crosses over from the Real World to the Dream World and it's when you explore the latter world and its many levels, ranging from quick and small to huge and time-consuming, that the game never feels boring. While you're in the Dream World, the bottom screen of the 3DS allows the player to control Luigi so that he can help his bro navigate the dreamy environment with ease.

And let's not forget the battles. Instead of simply taking a beating like you would in most turn-based RPGs, you can actively jump out of the way or counter your enemies' attacks by pressing either B or A to control Mario or Luigi, provided your timing is good. This also comes into play when you want to attack either individually or as a team. In the Dream World, Luigi plays a larger part in battles with some creative special moves. You can unlock new moves, not by leveling up the bros. but instead by collecting 10 whole pieces scattered throughout both worlds. Oh, and there's one other thing...

    Giant Luigi.

If you happen to own a 3DS XL, you'll be pleased to know that the larger screen makes for a greater display of Giant Luigi (and a regular-sized Mario sitting on Luigi's signature hat) duking it out with larger bosses in the Dream World. It's a great way to show off the 3DS's graphical capability with a pretty artstyle. The gameplay in these segments are more scripted to allow for an intense, cinematic experience so it's important that you learn the different patterns of your enemy or else you can find yourself losing health and repeating the same battle animations. Tilt controls are also very sensitive (resulting in me losing some otherwise flawless battles) but thankfully they aren't present in every Giant Battle.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is a big enough game that you can easily log in 50 hours with a fun story, colorful characters and enjoyable gameplay mechanics. You can even fight previous bosses in a boxing ring within Pi'illo Castle. In my opinion, at least, it is a must-own 3DS title.

    Final score: 8/10

Nice! I don't own a 3DS but sounds like you enjoyed it. I like the idea of being able to jump away from the attacks, and it's to good to hear it can be a nice lengthy adventure!

I forgot to mention that you can also counter attacks and, using a certain item, taunt a stronger enemy that might appear in the background for additional experience. But yeah, the game was a lot of fun and the 3DS really is an awesome platform.
