Is it irrational to buy a PS4 at launch with so many games still to play?

Is it irrational to buy a PS4 at launch both for myself and most other people like me? Listed below are a huge number of current gen games sorted by categories. Following that are the PS4 games that I know I'll want to get eventually. Does it make sense to cancel my preorder and just get a PS4 next year with a price cut or game included or possibly sometime in 2015 after a hardware revision?

I've got unplayed games for current gen systems
    The Witcher 2
    Tales of Xillia
    Tokyo Jungle
Tomb Raider (not sure about this one)
    Various PS+ games
Various free with XBL Gold games
Probably about 20 more downloaded games between Xbox 360 and PS3 that I bought on sale and can't think of

There are a few games that have been released that I still need to buy and play through
    Farcry 3
    FC3 Blood Dragon
ICO and SOTC Collection (never played these on PS2)
The Last of Us (not sure about this one)
    State of Decay
Dishonored (not sure about this one),
    Kingdoms of Amalur : Reckoning
    Gone Home
    Tales of the Abyss 3DS
    Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen
Zone of the Enders HD Collection
    Asura's Wraith
    Saint's Row 4
    Metro Last Light
    Brothers

As if that wasn't enough, there's more games yet to come out that I want:
    Tales of Xillia 2
    Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
    FF13-3
South Park The Stick of Truth
Starcraft 2 Legacy of the Void
    Bioshock Infinite DLC

Upcoming games I will eventually get for PS4 (in no particular order):
    Watch Dogs
    Final Fantasy 15
Destiny (not sure about this one)
    Witcher 3
    Dragon Age 3
    Infamous Second Son
    Killzone Shadow Fall
    Transistor
The Order: 1886 (not sure about this one)

You know, there comes a point where you need to just stop and breathe. I would say yes, it would be irrational. realistically are you actually going to buy all those games or is it just the idea that you haven't played all those games?

Maybe irrational for you but buying a PS4 makes perfect sense for me. So to each their own. I'm ready for the next gen.

It's a good point really. For example, the 20ish games I downloaded on sale but never played, I can't remember what they are so they're probably not that interesting to me so they were likely a waste of money. And thinking about it like this, I can probably narrow my list some....

Of the games I already own, I definitely want to play through:
    The Witcher 2
    Tales of Xillia
    Tokyo Jungle

Released games that I don't own yet:
    Gone Home
    Tales of the Abyss 3DS
    Saint's Row 4
    Metro Last Light
    Brothers

    Future releases:
    Tales of Xillia 2
    Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
    FF13-3
Starcraft 2 Legacy of the Void
    Bioshock Infinite DLC

Upcoming PS4 games I definitely want to play through:
    Watch Dogs
    Final Fantasy 15
    Witcher 3
    Dragon Age 3
    Infamous Second Son
    Transistor

So I can eliminate a bunch of games. Still, I see 12 current gen games there plus the Bioshock Infinite DLC. Is that a year's worth of content? There's a lot of RPG's in there...is it more than a year?

Here's my fear, I'm going to get a PS4 with maybe Watch Dogs at launch. Then I'll play my PS3/360 games that are left for me to play. Then next year a price drop hits and I paid full price for a system I almost never used. I can buy it with cash, I just hate feeling like I wasted money.

    edit:
Here's the games I cut. Are any of these "must play" games? I've really got to stick to the best of the best or games that are of great interest to me at this point. There are simply too many good games being released.

    Current gen games I cut:
    Tomb Raider
    Farcry 3
    FC3 Blood Dragon
    ICO and SOTC Collection
    The Last of Us
    State of Decay
    Dishonored
    Kingdoms of Amalur : Reckoning
    Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen
Zone of the Enders HD Collection
    Asura's Wraith
South Park The Stick of Truth

    Next gen games I cut
Destiny (not sure about this one)
    Killzone Shadow Fall

    edit 2:
When did playing video games start to feel so much like work?

Just stick with your PS3 and catch up on those games. PS4 will still be around. Might even have a price drop by then.

I am in a similar yet different situation than you. I have a lot of games that I need to finish (most of them I own already.) I also got a gift card which I used towards my pre-order making the PS4 only $199.99. If I didn't have the gift card, I probably would have waited (not for a price drop.)

If you want to go next-gen, then get it. If you can wait, then wait...

If you really want to play that many games on PS3 then you should stick with it and just buy a PS4 as soon as you're done with so many games which seems like it'll be a while unless you don't work or go to school.

No more irrational than buying say 20 PS+/XBL games on discount while having a backlog and knowing Next Gen Consoles where coming and knowing you're going to want to buy at least one if not both consoles?

At some point you need to cut you're losses and move forward. It's up to you as to when this is. You can actually save some money by waiting a year, playing out your existing ones (don't worry about PS+ free games unless they are on your gotta play list - DL them but don't worry about them.) Then a year from now when you pick up the next gen consoles they early releases should be lower priced, that said, you'll have a backlog of games you want to play on the Next Gen by the point, and you'll never get out from under this

The only game i've got left to play on PS3 now is Beyond once that hits i can trade once completed, I dont think The Last Guardian will ever hit and i think GT6 will be disappointing like 5. Im good to go to nxt-gen!

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I think I'll hold off a year on next gen.

Let me help you out with the backlog, I've played a bunch of those. Of the ones I've played, I bolded the ones I think you should play. The rest you can skip depending on how you feel about each individually.

Sleeping Dogs - This game is a must play. It's the best city in a sandbox game I've ever played. Be warned (violence), it's brutal. It earned that M rating.

DarkSider -This game is okay. It's a Zelda clone that can be skipped unless you REALLY want to play it.

DarkSiders 2 - Same as Darksiders 1 except this has some additional RPG elements (loot, leveling up, etc). This has some fun gameplay mechanics but it's another mid-tier THQ game.

XCOM:EU - This game is fantastic. If you liked Valkryia Chronicles you'll love this thing. This is easily one of the best games last year.

Bioshock Infinite - Excellent game. People go nuts over it but it is a bit full of itself. I did like it though.

Deus Ex - This is good and probably worth a single playthrough if you liked the original game (not Deus Ex 2).

Gears:Judgement - This game is truly awful. Don't play it. I loved Gears 1, 2, and 3. This adds nothing of significance to the story. Do yourself a favor and sell this pile.

Halo Wars - This is alright. I like RTS's so I enjoyed it. It's probably the best RTS on console. It would be worth your time if you really love RTS's or you're super into Halo. Otherwise skip it.

Civilization - This isn't really something I would consider a "backlog" game per say since it's more of "in the mood to play it" kind of game.

Crackdown - This game is an average sandbox game. I'm assuming you got it for free. It's okay but it's easily skippable.

LA Noire - This game is a must play. It's right up there with Sleeping Dogs in terms of quality.

You have more time on your hands than me (I assume you gave up Television and either have married or don't care about that).

If your going to play all of that, chill and wait.
By my count I still have 669 NES games to buy that I haven't beaten yet.

I don't think so. The good thing about having a backlog is there's always something to play. I have a backlog that spans multiple generations lol. There's so many games that i didn't even get around to playing on the PS2 and Xbox. Nevermind the PS3 and 360.

I'd just buy the PS4 if i was you and get around to playing your backlog when you can. Those games will be around forever. Enjoy what you can now. Worry about the rest later.

Yeah, if we were to go back through the past 30 years of gaming lol... well, it'll take me 30 more years to play 'em all.

To OP I would keep the preorder. I don't see anything on the PS3 that you will be missing out on. Those games you have on your list yet to play I see 2 or 3 worth playing. Also I HIGHLY DOUBT there will be a price drop in 1 yr on the PS4. $399 is NOT a bad price point for Sony and even if X1 gets to $399 by next year Sony still isn't hurting. I would play the 1 or 2 games you have until it comes out...and some games like Last of Us will still hold up really well against PS4 launch games graphic wise. Those PS4 games will start rolling out pretty quickly next year and lets be honest...you never have enough time to play EVERY game.

As for Mynd...unless you already have purchased all those games I can say you aren't missing a lot on most of those. COD...waste of money....the multiplayer is ok but single player is a giant snooze fest. I could cut that list down to a half a dozen easily and not feel I missed anything. Having played over 75% of that list I could only justify a handful of those games. My question is you are soo active on this board...do you ever play any games lol??? Because a ton of those games are old old games or do you just kinda game on a budget and wait for price drops. I will say I could have saved myself a ton of money (if that mattered) because most of that list especially the sequels were big let downs or just more of the same and didn't add any real memorable gameplay for me. Just my opinion but I wouldn't have regretted not playing most of those games and don't think you will miss anything revolutionary in more than half. At some point you just have to pick what interest you the most and cut the rest because its going to keep you from moving on.

Just a thought, i believe mynd isn't from the us, but Sony is expected to have the Gaikai here by 2014 you can always upgrade and then download the ps3 games later....but I must say...once you've played next gen....its very hard to go back and play previous gen games because the graphics usually hurt my eyes.

Most decisions people make in life are irrational, there would be no business if we held our money all the time, we want PS4 why ? because it's new!, Do we need to buy in right now? No there's no need, but there's a want a demand for that moment.

I've got a massive back catalog of PS3 games, but that's a fantastic thing to have because there's not going to be any SUPER DUPER PS4 titles for a while.

The first year is going to be stale, plenty of "good enough" titles but nothing spectacular "well maybe a few but you know what I mean".

New games get old quickly so the moment you get bored at least you've got PS3 to fall back on, first year is going to have many many network issues, hopefully not but it's bound to happen while sony works the kinks out

I'm the type of gamer that if I don't buy it at launch....90% chance I will never play it because there is usually always a game almost every month that I will buy. Of course with PS+ it has given me a shot for free at some I've passed on...like XCOM and Borderlands which I enjoyed so much I bought the sequels when they came out a month later (thats what is great about ps+ for devs it gets gamers who might not buy their game to play the series and if they get hooked well then the next installment comes out and they buy it). But I've passed on games I was on the fence and I've never looked back because there is always something else out there for me. I can't stand to wait on a new console. I want to try it and experience it as soon as I can and play those new games. There aren't too many PS3 games I see coming out except GT6 that I can't experience on PS4. I've played all the PS3 games I would want and ready to move on....I mean I've played probably 150-200 games this gen...if it was decent I played it so I'm ready for the next gen...those that haven't...I'm sure they can catch up later...but if your always playing catch up...your never going to get all the way there...I would cut the meh games and kinda interested games...play the must haves and move on.

I blame Steam for this. I have tons of impulse Steam purchases and some of the titles I did not even bother to install.
