All hatred towards dualshock due to incorrect holding?

We've all heard it from our fellow xbox friends, they claim the xbox controller is the greatest controller of all time and that the Playstation controller is too small and sticks are in the wrong place. Well I may have stumbled on to the reason xbox players feel this way and how to change their perspective. You see the xbox controller is designed so that the legs rest along the crease in the middle of your palm that is made when you touch you thumb and pinky together. So naturally when they try to play with the dualshock they try to hold it the same way which simply does not work and feels awkward and I could see why xbox players would hate the dualshock. The correct way to hold the dualshock is with the legs resting along the horizontal crease that is made where your fingers start to protrude from your hand. I have found that correcting the way they hold the dualshock removes all discomfort and displeasure with the controller. The only improvements they ask for are the ones the dualshock 4 has promised: to be wider set, have concave thumbsticks, and have concave triggers.

Maybe the hatred just stemmed from people needing something else to $#@! about. The controller is a ridiculous reason to disregard a whole console.

I actually got into a debate with someone and they gave me a test on holding my hands out as of I were holding a DS3. They said my thumb should be stretching making uncomfortable. We both came to the conclusion that we both hold the DS3 different. So honestly I think that is where many see it as uncomfortable. Most Xbox gamers are so used too holding a 360 pad compared to a DS3. Which honestly if I hold a DS3 that way it is uncomfortable. So I can see where they are coming from. But I'm so used to holding a DS3, holding a 360 controller is a bit uncomfortable.

You are correct sir. Many of the people who $#@! and moan about the DS controllers hold them wrong. They either never owned PS consoles in the past or are just cretins. I don't know why it's such a hard concept to grasp; you do not hold it with your full palm, you hold it at the base of your fingers/top of your palm. This actually gives your thumbs a greater range of motion than controllers which require you to hold with the full palm.

So you not supposed to rest your palm on the controller? I honestly cant see that being the "correct" way of holding the DS3 as you'd get cramped quicker than usual.

The correct way is by putting these things on the pad...(Grips, Triggers, Thumb Grips)

As many already have said, people who complain about the DS controller probably holds it the wrong way. I think it's the best controller out there, and could never play with asymetrical controllers (like the XBox controller), that feels wrong to me.

I've never gotten hand cramps holding a DS3 that way. When I get in intense moments and I start grippingthe controller very hard I can but in the relaxed position, grips in the top of your palm, I've gamed for all over 6 hours at a time without any problems. It's just the natural way people who game on DS3 hold the controller. Predominately Xbox gamers grip in the middle of their palm because that is what they are used to. That is not the most comfortable and natural way to grip a DS3. They are designed different.

^^ Lets hope that with Sony changing the DS this time round you dont start to get cramps. They might bring out a version for small hands if people complain about the size of the new pad.

While the DS3 isn't a bad controller i find the 360 pad far superior. Hopefully with the PS4 pad now being larger, bigger space between sticks and what looks like better triggers the pad should be much better

I dont have problems with either controller I just prefer the 360 controller over the DS3 because I have big hands so a bigger controller feels better to me. The DS4 looks like it will feel better to me because its bigger and wider. But with that being said I've never gotten cramped with the DS3 because I know how to hold it. Maybe due to being used to playing Playstation consoles I dont know. The DS4 looks very much improved imo and I think it will feel very comfortable to me. But the 360 controller is better than the DS3 imo. The 360 controller does have a crappy d-pad though. DS3 d-pad is way better.

Glad to see this post made. I actually tested this a week or so ago and I came to the same conclusion.

While I don't disagree with the fact that the 360 pad's design was an improvement to the dualshock. I don't really get all that thumb placement arguments. My 360 controller doesn't feel more comfortable just because the thumbs stick is in the "right" position, but because it's a more ergonomic design overall.

Thumb placement for my hands is identical in both controllers. The difference is that on the 360 pad the stick is above the thumb and on the DS3 the stick is bellow.

I made a vid to show what I'm talking about.

I said it before in another thread a few weeks go controlelrs as with mice there have 2 main styles of grip

    Palm
Claw - with the subset fingertip
    http://www.razerzone.com/mouseguide/.../fingertipgrip

The 360 being palm style grip
The DS3 being claw/fingertip style grip

I always used my fingertips to hold a dualshock controller if I palm it its impossible to use.

The claw holding isn't as natural for a lot of people. I prefer the 360 controller even with using the DS previous generations. The problem is the original controller design wasn't meant for thumbsticks, they were tacked on. This doesn't mean it's a bad controller though, I can play with it just fine. I hope the ps4 controller improves on it greatly.

I've been using the DS for over 10 years and to me it's the best controller, actually designed for ALL types of games, the 360 is much more comfortable to hold but it's clearly designed for shooters, no way would I play with it playing a fighter.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you have to have instructions on how to hold a controller then it's designed wrong. Simplez

The small but vocal set of idiots who need the instructions will find the problem lies in their motor cortex, not the controller

My spider fingers are quite versatile. I hold the DS3 both ways interchangeably and never had an issue.

edit: I must say though, one would think it would be obvious for something like the dual shock that it's not meant to be palmed (unless yo have bite-sized hands). Clearly speaks to lacking intelligence among people these days imo.
