    If you won the Lottery

If you won the lottery, what would you do? I'm not talking about how you would spend it and all that. I'm asking a bigger question. How would you take the money? Cash Option or being paid over the course of 20 or so years. I saw the MD lottery having one of their jackpots at 400 Million and the Cash Option is 222 Million.

What route would you go? I'm sure you'll receive A LOT more of the money if you take the 20 year course, but you have instant gratification if you go the Cash option route. I'm actually torn on the matter. Part of me says I'd get the money now and TURN UP! Or as my Grandfather would say, "Give me my money NOW". Then another part goes you'll get more money over the years and that will help you secure the future better, y'know?

    What would you do?

I'd take the cash option, and put it all away. I'd take out huge amounts in cash to keep in a vault that I would buy, but then. I'd live pretty much the same as I do now...except without debts.

If you take a significant portion of the winnings and invest it you can make more money in 20 years than the 20 year payout would give you.

Absolutely. Taking the annuity option makes less sense if you know better.

First I was thinking about the 20 year option, but when I thought about it, the better option is probably cash. As some of you said, you're probably going to make more money if you invest them in some way. But at the same time the chicken in me says that you might as well loose alot of the money if you try to gamble with a stock portfolio or something like that. Taking the cash and put them in an (bank) account where I could get some interest would probably be an option I would consider.

I'd honestly take the 20 year route. Less chance to just stupidly blow it, and I dont have the patience to invest lol

Taking inflation into account over a 20 year period, it wouldn't even be a whole lot more anyway. Much better to take the lump sum and invest it properly

$#@! man, you could just go to an asset management firm. They'll invest it for you haha. You'd be just fine.

Interest however is still low, and you might not beat inflation.

20 year plan, all you guys would blow it on expensive sneakers and be broke by friday.
The quick cash option really is for mugs, if you win 400million you deserve 400million, even spread over 20 years thats 2million a year.
Right now I live on less than 40k a year, that suddenly wouldn't multiply by 50!

Even with 500k you can make a decent investment.
I'd probably buy up the worlds collection of .999 pure silver.

Hey! Now that's not fair! I would blow a good portion of it on sneakers and still have money. So there, dug!

Yeah, that's an option too. But you would still be gambling with your money. You could just as well loose most of it, especially since the economical world today is so damn unstable. It's not an easy choice, one way or another you might get f***ed.

You mean 20 million a year don't you?

I think I live on about the same amount of money as you do right now, even less maybe. If my income would increase by 500 times I could probably live better than I do now, on just the interest alone.

20 Years course. I am not desperate to gain such a big amount of money in one moment. I just will relax and now that my future is now constructed.

I'd take the cash payout now because you don't know what will happen to it in the future. Three years from now, they go bankrupt, and can't pay out any more, etc. Ya never now.

if it was guaranteed to be paid out over X years, I'd consider it. I'd be happier knowing it was being held than risk having sit in my bank account with the possibility of the bank collapsing.

if not, I'd take the cash and look at ways to invest it in ventures that grant a steady & reliable return, rather than just have it sit around again waiting for the potential bank collapse to come along and wipe the majority of it out.
