Not something very useful to me as I doubt i'd recorded gameplay but this is great news for any budding game reviewers out there!

Can it record anything over HDMI? What if I was watching a bluray, could it record that?

    Great great feature!

Question - Will it disable HDCP? If not what will the recorded video be viewable on?

I seriously doubt that, over hdmi... I can do it now with the av multi out, and the gear I use.

I'm thinking it won't have hdcp involved in the game discs; only blu-ray movie discs. The game content won't be encrypted with the HDCP. That's my take on it.

Another way to look at it is that this is for first party games, and it's up to third party pubs/devs on whether they use hdcp for their content. Muddy water right now.

Given that's really the only thing they have to block video game capture over HDMI, yeah it's just either not supporting this on gaming.

To be honest I think it would be boneheaded for a games (or game devs) to enforce HDCP over HDMI. When the PS3 came out though a lot of TV manufactures were having a hard time getting the handshaking implementations down and enabling and disabling HDCP simply wouldn't work correctly on a lot of those other systems. So going between say a BD where HDCP makes sense, to a video game, and later back to BD would cause handshaking heartburn for some of the early HDMI based TVs (monitors had an even worse time of it.) And with this the PS3 simply used HDCP always.

I think that now that we're way passed those issues on newer sets, it makes sense to not do this on games. Heck it's a boon that people make walk through's and show off there run and gun skills and post them on YouTube to the game developers. So I don't see any 3rd party Devs requiring HDCP.

I'm a little confused on this subject. I thought we always knew from the start that we can record gameplay and upload to youtube with the share button. Why is this news? Can someone enlighten me?

Share button records the last 15 mins of gameplay, a vid capture device lets you record for hours (depending on the HDD space and vid quality).

The PS4 is constantly recording gameplay and saving the last 15 minutes just in case we do something cool we can press that button and permanently save the last 15 minutes.
I think we could if we wanted to set it up to record for longer periods of time since it is always running.
That is just speculation on my part.

Still external devices will probably offer higher quality.

This is why Sony's Playstation is going to be a big success. They are again giving options and while the online portion is forced to play online (this is for an example) it's just good to see they aren't trapping everything on the system and forced upon others. For people that are not familiar with video capture hardware and whatever else, this is a great option for people to first start using.

I'm glad to hear this is official. This means every console this coming generation is not HDCP free.

Can only be a good thing to the end users.

I assume you actually meant to say that every console this coming generation is HDCP free. Which for gaming is true, but for BD playback and XBOX One's passing of cable box's HDMI and any streaming media service your better bet you sweet ass that HDCP is going to be there.
