Is anyone else a completely awful pilot?

planes are easy enough, helicopters are more tricky in my opinion. the camera doesn't stay behind the tail as it did previous times, but moves from side to side, when making the slightest turn.

what does make it more tricky when flying planes, is that there is no way of knowing how much power being used. there should be an on screen gauge showing throttle %. quite a few times I have nearly stalled out of the sky by lowering the throttle coming into land.

I've yet to get my hands on a helicopter. But the bit I did fly a plane, it was a lot easier then I had expected. I was actually able to land the thing.

Normally it's been the other way around, but this time I found that flying planes is a lot easier than a helicopter.

I was trying the time trial for the flying school with a chopper and whenever I try to fly forwards, the helicopter always heads downwards too, so I have to keep readjusting and therefore end up failing the time trial.
It is annoying, considering it was always a lot easier to maintain and fly a helicopter in the previous games.

I take to flying in games fairly easily so not really any problems here.

The helicopters however tend to sway from side to side a lot, I put it down to strong cross winds!! If you get the chance have a play with the CargoBob (twin rotor heli), it's great fun picking up all manor of vehicles and dropping them on fast moving traffic.

You can even pick up the big rigs, although the trailer generally falls off, it is a bit of unwieldy beast at the best of times, when carrying somethig heavy it's quite a task to keep it in the air.

The planes are pretty easy, the first time I flew one though I wasn't expecting to get turbulence and that threw me for a second or 2!

Planes were pretty easy from the start, but the helicopter took a while to master. Could only get silver on both helicopter challenges, but after skipping them then playing through the game I finally went back and got them both on the first try.

Choppers seem harder and more fragile to control. Planes can get hard if you're flying low and there's turbulence, which I absolutely love about the flying in this game, the turbulence effects. Makes it so much more real.

    The choppers are awful.

I'm not a huge fan of the flying but the planes are OK. Usually I switch flight controls so I use the analog stick to turn and L1/R1 to roll but I can't change it in GTA.

Focus. Control. Conviction. Resolve. A true ace lacks none of these attributes. Nothing can deter you from the task at hand except your own fears. This is your sky.

The ones at the hanger you buy as Trevor? Eventually you do ones where you also have to stay below radar, as well as bombing runs.

Honestly, I thought they were too easy, as was the final flight school mission that involved doing "tricks" in the plane. I was expecting having to do at least one knife between buildings and fly upside down under a bridge. Helicopters, though... that's my weakness.

I usually fly the planes with a I don't care if I crash this thing attitude, so maybe it's about not being so careful. The first time I did the helicopter flight mission I was playing it careful and crashed a couple times.

I'm sure after flying enough you'll end up a pro. I've also done all the knife flights, so that's probably why that Get Your Wings flight school test wasn't that hard. I can't count how many times I failed those attempts (thank you R* for the quick save feature).

Sometimes, even with maxed out skills

Flying will still be hard on some planes and Choppers

Here is a small guide for all you flying noobs. I am quite a good pilot in both aircraft's and helicopters.

You should know that there are two ways to turn with planes. One would be keeping the plane steady and then holding L1 or R1 (dont know which buttons on xbox). The other one would be turning the plane on a certain side by using the left joystick and then hold it down to turn. Same with helicopters however there is a slight difference. To land planes you should first locate an appropriate landing location or airport, then be sure to have space and align your plane with the landing zone and slowly descend while decreasing the speed by holding L2, shortly afterwards release your planes chassis by clicking the left joystick, keep slowly and steady descending until you land. With helicopter you first have to locate an appropriate location then slowly descend using L2 in order to land properly correct your helicopters position using the left stick, shortly before landing descend slowly. To fly a helicopter first achieve a decent height and then simultaneously use the left stick to move forward and hold R" to accelerate, note that the angle of your helicopter doesnt get too sharp otherwise instead of flying forward you will descend down and crash.

Hope that helped, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

the planes aren't that bad. just the first one was a little wonky but then you get used to it. there are better/easier planes. also your skill will go up. so don't worry.
