    Valve Announces The Steam Controller

My first thought when I saw this was:

    http://kotaku.com/valve-announces-th...ont-1411558137

We've got the operating system, we've got the hardware, and now we've got the human interface device. The third prong of Valve's all-out attack on living room gaming is the Steam Controller, a gamepad with dual trackpads, haptic feedback and a touch screen.
Two clickable trackpads are the most prominent feature of the Steam Controller. a pair of touch-sensitive pads with resolution approaching that of a desktop mouse. It's the logical halfway point between mouse and gamepad control.

Steam is getting its very own operating system, Valve announced today. It'll be a combination of Steam's current platform and Linux. Readů

This is the third and final of three announcements scheduled this week in order to show the world what Valve's new hardware initiative is all about. On Monday, Valve unveiled SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system designed for living room gaming. On Tuesday, the company talked Steam Machines, formerly-known as Steam Boxes, living room systems from multiple manufacturers utilizing SteamOS, due out in 2014.
Together with the latest announcement, Valve is effectively breaking down the few remaining obstacles standing in the way of PC gaming dominance in the living room. 2014 is going to be one hell of a year in gaming.

Have to see more, but the haptic feedback is definitely a welcomed addition.

I'm certainly intrigued about how this is going to work. I do think that gamepads have been stuck in the 90's and require a new look and feel. While this probably isn't it only time will tell to see how well it will work. It's interesting to see that they've done away with the sticks and have gone with a trackpad instead, this is actually a very good idea because not only are you removing any mechanical function (wear and tear) but you're also essentially making things more accurate once you get used to it (yes I know, key sentence there).

Also it'll be using haptic feedback instead of rumble feedback which are connected to the trackpads... this controller is really sounding weirder by the minute!

Edit: I remember seeing that pad somewhere before, but back then it was dreadful! For starters it wasn't even analogue.

All I Know of track pad controls is when I use the emulators with my android touch screen to play a couple older titles. $#@! starts creeping all over the place and you are always having to concentrate to zero your controls. Being different just for the sake of being different just introduces a learning curve where there doesn't need to be one.

Focus. Control. Conviction. Resolve. A true ace lacks none of these attributes. Nothing can deter you from the task at hand except your own fears. This is your sky.

The only 2 things will determine the success of the steambox is the price and whether it will accept physical disks. Not the controller or anything else.

There will be different Steam Machines, some might have a physical drive. This is a Steam product though, there's not much point in that.

PC gamers seem more willing to adopt digital games, no idea why this is.
I just checked when my last physical disc based game I registered to steam was.

Digital only is a dealbreaker for most of console gamers, they don't even accept it on PS-Xbox, and my guess is that Steam wants to appeal to those people, so....

Why? Just because it doesn't look like a conventional controller? Because it's not pretty?

I choose function over form any day of the week. If it works like they say it will, don't be surprised if other companies start to develop new controllers based on their ideas.

On digital distribution. Don't think the Steambox will have a drive. Doesn't need one. Steam is already a fully fledged DD service. Even if you buy a disc based steam game, you only need the code, not the disc.

Looks really crap, and I dont mean on a looks basis.. everything else. Button placement seems rather silly, you have to take your finger off movement to hit XY? stretch your other finger over? And Ive never had much like for touch-like controls.. so yeah.

Th controller has 16 buttons total, you can press 6 buttons without taking thumbs off track pads which is the same a s a dual shock or Xbox controller.

It's odd and ugly, but I think it may be useful in the end. Having to move your left thumb off of the movement pad to hit X or Y is a bummer though.

I referenced XY so it should of been obvious I was on about the face buttons. I dont see how those two can be comfortably pressed, without taking your thumbs off the "movement" pad. It just seems like bad placement to me.
