I'm extremely excited about the touchpad.
I don't think some people realize how beneficial it's going to be.
Just as 4 easy instant hotkeys is reason enough, not to mention gestures as well.
Quick 1st person view to look around, analog sticks can be so sluggish when trying to simply look around yourself in first person.
Obviously menus and maps will be utilized, and of course this can be optional, so you can still navigate normally if you wish.
Things like press and hold L1 then slide your thumb from down to up, (or any direction) could work well for quick zoom on a sniper rifle.
Mini games like lock picking or hacking could make use of it for sure, I would think.
Any quick precise movement for anything that needs it.
Imagine in Saints Row IV, if you could just walk up to anyone and whatever direction you swipe the touchpad in you would grab and throw them across the screen.
These ideas are off the top of my head right now, imagine the ideas that these professional developers are going to come up with.
I can't wait to see how Sony's 1st party games utilize it, because there the only games that can take serious advantage of it.
Any 3rd party game will also have to accommodate regular controls as well.

That was pretty good use indeed. Makes it simpler and more functional.

Useless, they actually didn't find any good use for it. And the analog sticks seems faster.

Nothing too intuitive about that. My bet is we won't see a great use for it until we start seeming some games from the first party studios.

I just hope they don't tack features on to it 'just because'. I can't think of many uses for it in game, other than map looking but then again, i'm not a creative game developer. The important thing about the controller is that it now looks a decent size!

Call me pessimistic but I think this is probably going to be the second best use of the touchpad. Web browsing being the first.
They might surprise me but I don't hold my hopes up.

I think it looks fair. I'm sure future games will utilize the pad better but I think this is a decent first attempt.

I hope developers don't make a habit of this. The new touchpad is just the new SixAxis, and I remember the frustration of playing Uncharted 1 and Flower with that forced SixAxis. It's fun for a while, but it is ultimately a novelty and a gimmick.

Yeah that does sound about right. Still, it's nice to have the option

Unfortunately your right, but I do feel the touchpad has a better chance than the 6 axis did.
As long as it's not just thrown into games for the sake of using it, then it shouldn't be an issue.
But if utilized creatively, then I think it could have some useful potential in games.

I forget, for this game was it stated whether or not the touchpad functionality is optional? I'm looking forward to trying it myself but I always think it's best to give people options.

I'm sure plenty of them, although its weird...I'm not hearing much about the new pad at all. You would think there would be more excitement brewing over it.

That looks great and I hope devs use the full potential of the touchpad but not to a point where it becomes annoying to use

For sure! It's only fun if they don't beat you to death with it
