Don't know how many there were but there are rumors another 1 million is going to be added for the Japan launch.
The PS4 Sells Out Faster than Hotcakes at All Major Japanese Retailers; In Most Cases Within Minutes
This morning between 7 and 7:30 AM local time the floodgates for preorders of the PS4 opened on most Japanese major retail websites. How fast did it sell out? Very, Very Fast.
All the Japanese online stores in which the console has gone up for preorder in the window mentioned above, including Amazon Japan, Yodabashi Camera, Bic Camera, Sofmap, Edion and Rakuten Books ran out of stock extremely fast. Some within mere minutes. Amazon Japan was the one to last the longest, for about 40 minutes.
Both bundles offered, one with a voucher to download Knack, and one with the game and a PlayStation Camera, simply disappeared from the virtual shelves like they never existed.
The screencap you can see below, from Amazon Japan, is just an example of what Japanese gamers who were too late are looking at as I’m writing. They’ll have to rely on the only two retailers that are going to start preorders later, Nojima at 10 AM and Joshin at noon. Most likely their stock is going to evaporate in minutes as well.
Despite the delay of the release to February the 22nd, looks like Japan in still in love with PlayStation.

No surprise. Japan is stupidly loyal to home-grown products. Sony has Japan in their pocket for sure.
I'd love to know how many units were released for pre-order in Japan.

Not surprised in the least.
Sony can sell anything in Japan, it's why they made the Xperia Z waterproof.
yeah I ain't surprised I don't think it's a console war over there we all know who is gonna win lol
Japanese generally buy their own product because there aren't better alternatives out there. that's all it is. otherwise, by definition, i'm also a japanese civilian and i can assure you that i'm an american.
I don't believe what I said contradicted that statement. That said, to clarify if they find two products of what they view as relative the same in quality level, they will go with Japanese version if one is available. Unlike here were the vast majority of people will not even think about it and will by whatever w/o thinking about it's origins.
I've actually got a lot more Korean electronics in my Household than Japanese and I still have a good amount of American. I buy what's the best (or best value) w/o thoughts on nationalism and from observations and discussions w/ many of my Japanese Colleagues I can say that nationalism is a very high factor in purchasing.
if americans made the best electronics, you would also see americans saying that they only buy american products because they're american. they may not understand that they just make the best products.
if they really were that nationalist, why would they buy iPods over the walkmans? iPhones are also doing very well in Japan but we all know why Samsung is winning overall in these places, it has nothing to do with nationalism.
you guys have no idea how popular japanese electronics are in other countries. growing up in pakistan, we didn't buy anything non-japanese. i'm sure chinese products have taken over there but we had everything Sony/Hitachi/Panasonic etc.
if the japanese didn't make the best products, they wouldn't buy their own products.
But according to some members here, console gaming is dead in Japan.. What's going on?
Seriously tho, let's see if the sales continue passed initial buzz.

Lol calling japanese nationalist? they have a diffrent taste, calling this nationalist is plain wrong. I guess nowadays picking RPG over FPS is a crime.
