Researchers Study Chicken Nuggets, Find They Are “Mostly Fat”

There is surprisingly little chicken in chicken nuggets, researchers argue in a paper published in last month's issue of the American Journal of Medicine.

On the other hand, chicken nuggets appear to contain lots of fat and traces of bones, blood vessels, nerves, even connective tissue.

This fairly disturbing conclusion was reached after a team of specialists with the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the Baptist Medical Center took the time to pin down the “ingredients” used to make chicken nuggets sold by two national fast food chains in the US.

For the time being, the researchers have not released the name of these fast food chains.

“Chicken nuggets have become a major component of the American diet. We sought to determine the current composition of this highly processed food,” the specialists offered as an explanation for their decision to look into this issue.

“Randomly selected nuggets from 2 different national fast food chains were fixed in formalin, sectioned and stained for microscopic analysis,” they detailed on the methodology they used.

Dr. Richard D. deShazo of the University of Mississippi Medical Center says that the chicken nuggets sold by the first of these fast food chains “[were] composed of approximately 50% skeletal muscle, with the remainder composed primarily of fat, with some blood vessels and nerve present.”

According to Business Insider, the nuggets from the other fast food chains contained 40% skeletal muscle, fat, connective tissue, and bone.

“Striated muscle (chicken meat) was not the predominate component in either nugget. Fat was present in equal or greater quantities along with epithelium, bone, nerve, and connective tissue,” the researchers concluded.

“Chicken nuggets are mostly fat, and their name is a misnomer,” they went on to say.

By the looks of it, what worriers the researchers the most is the fact that chicken nuggets are often marketed as a healthy food option. They hope that, in light of these findings, people will think twice before eating some.

I guess this is somewhat important, the health of the nation and all that but it stil begs the questions what other things are scientists researching?

I bet if these scientists that conducted this research probably once thought they could be working on the next medical break through, curing cancer or rabies or giving blind people eyesight.

No. They simply check the fat in chicken nuggets and say its mostly fat.

Not something to be proud of.

I am so glad people are becoming more aware of their health and are eating more often at places like Subway.

I can't even eat at McDonald's anymore; the grease makes me sick to my stomach.

Doesn't take much research beyond just eating one IMO.

Subway is just as made. Thier meat is processed. Your better going to a super market that serves subs because they use the deli meat.

For real? Aw man, I was thinking Subway was natural because the vegetables are so fresh and the meat looks so good and etc.

Scientific research is all baby steps, this project probably didn't take long as well. A nation's health and diet is at risk though.

The public doesn't care. Chicken nuggets are cheap.

I avoid fast food like the plague, and if everyone made some better food decision's, then America wouldn't be the most obese country in the world.

Its not juat tah though. Eating bad is cheap like dirt cheap. Trying to eat healthy is twice as much unless you just eat redundent stuff like chicken and rice. It is so stupid I can get a fat full meal for 3 bucks but a healthy meal cost twice that. Healthy food like veggies and fruits deserve a tax break.

It's been known for quite a while that chicken nuggets, McDonalds in particular, aren't REAL chick meat at all.

    Enjoy this, don't puke.

Not only that but I can't even smell McDonalds. One of my friends brought some over since he didn't eat dinner and the smell was just disgusting.

any food that doesn't give anything back after eating it is not worth eating. For example, McDonalds or any other fast food will cause you to drag for the rest of the day. This is because your stomach is working so hard to digest that quarter pounder hamburger and that hamburger isn't giving anything back. It's empty calories that serve no benefit and in turn gets you fat, there is no positive energy from those calories.

I thought this was already a pretty known fact?

It was known but because of the research it makes it more of a fact rather than an assumption. I doubt anyone thinks chicken nuggets are healthy. It's just research from scientist saying that it's nothing but fat. Some people need to hear it from someone that has a piece of paper to back up his work otherwise they don't believe it. In this case though, every knows they aren't healthy.
