I'm not buying anymore PS3 games since PS4 is getting ready to launch and I'm trading my PS3 towards it.

Not making the same mistake I made with my PS2 games, keeping all my PS3 stuff and waiting to buy a PS4.

There's a review from a Finnish gaming publication give it's a 6.5 (oh man do I hate quantified criticism but I'm afraid it's here to stay.) Apparently they think it's mediocre because there's no game in it. I have a feeling a lot of reviews from smaller publications will come in that way. Slagging Beyond for lacking a game is the same sort of thing as dismissing Plants vs. Zombies because it has no story. I don't mean that literally. There should be more game in Beyond than story in PvZ. But hopefully my point is clear.

I used to review games. I stopped for various reasons, but probably foremost because it wasn't worth getting games early and free and have to finish them in 2 days when normally I'd take a couple weeks or as long as I pleased to finish them. However, I have young kids and I became sort of the default kids' game reviewer and I had to learn, using again the abominable score scale, that a 5 of 10 for an adult gamer on a movie tie-in game is for a child gamer with a child's expectations of a game, and also heavily invested in the characters and story of the film property, more like an 8 of 10. It doesn't do any good to review an interactive drama game if you don't have a critic on staff perfectly happy with story over gameplay. Just take a pass, or play it, decline to review and publish a note about how in your opinion it won't appeal to most gamers with a very specific definition of what they call a game.

This Finnish publication probably gave Heavy Rain a 10. Of course, if true, on its surface that makes no sense, but really there is a pattern there. New angles and mechanics in game design become critical darlings. Continuing and even substantially improved iterations of that same reasonably novel gameplay implementation won't get the same kind of positive attention.

Joystiq doesnt use the usual review spectrum (more of a "should I play") but they gave it a 2.5/5.
    Destructoid gave it a 5/10.

Cant say Im NOT considering returning it when I get it tomorrow even though I got it for $40. Though I wasnt exactly loving Heavy Rain so maybe this one is better for me lol

If they quantify it with a score it's the usual review spectrum. Joystiq just likes to play at being different. And they do admit abandoning a game without finishing it instead of dropping it halfway through and writing the back half of the review from the press packet. Well, they admit they abandon SOME games. I'm sure plenty they bail and use the press packet like everyone else. My all time fave reviews from any source are when plot elements were last minute changed in the review and retail copies of the game but the changes didn't make it into the press packet. And the reviews wax poetic over plot twists that were pulled from the game before any actual reviewers got their hands on any version of the game.

Beat it with my girlfirend last night. Words cannot express how utterly disappointed I was with this game. Choices didn't matter, felt like a passive participant, writing was sub-par, many of the chapters were completely useless (novato, the mission, etc), and there was no central plot point.

it's weird cause the more I think about Heavy Rain, the less I like it. I like the idea of Heavy Rain more then I like the game itself. Like I said in another thread I think David Cage has some good ideas, but he really needs someone to come in and seperate the good from the bad.
