Mega textures push Call of Duty: Ghosts on PC to 50GB

Want to play Call of Duty: Ghosts on PC? Then you'll need 50GB of space on your hard-drive.Nvidia published the minimum and recommended system requirements for the upcoming shooter on its website, and they reveal the game comes in at a whopping 50GB.
Also of note: you need 6GB of RAM at a minimum to play.
    Those minimum specs in full:

    • OS: Windows 7 64-Bit / Windows 8 64-Bit
    • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66 GHZ / AMD Phenom X3 8750 2.4 GHZ or better
    • RAM: 6 GB RAM
    • HDD: 50 GB HD space
    • Video: Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti / ATI Radeon HD 5870 or better
    • Sound: DirectX Compatible Sound Card
    • DirectX: 11
    • Internet: Broadband connection and service required for Multiplayer Connectivity. Internet connection required for activation

    And the recommended specs:

    • Video: Nvidia GeForce GTX 780

So, why would Ghosts, a game in a series that isn't known for pushing graphics hardware, require 50GB of hard-drive space?
It may have something to do with the size of the textures. Nvidia has in recent months made a song and dance about playing PC games at 4K resolution, and one of the titles it's name-checked as part of this effort is Call of Duty: Ghosts.

"Of course, to play games at 4K you're going to need a top-end system, one that features SLI GeForce GTX 770s, GTX 780s, or GTX SLI TITANs," Nvidia's Andrew Burnes wrote in ablog post published in September.

"Only these configurations have the performance to power games like Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Watch_Dogs to their maximum potential.

"To ensure a flawless 4K experience Nvidia is working closely with the developers of each game, and in addition to supporting 4K, we are working hand-in-hand with the developers to integrate exclusive, game-changing Nvidia technologies like PhysX, TXAA, and HBAO."
    Source

Next generation requirements are looking mighty good! Something to make our systems bleed at last? If only 1)4K Could run at 60fps and 2)I could afford a 4K Screen

Sweet nice to see the Minimum Requirements take a Big Jump for New games I wish I could SLI my 770 but my 1100T CPU would Bottleneck it which would mean a Board Change to Intel new CPU & upgrading my PSU from a 650 to about 850W I think.

But still should be able to play on decent settings @ 1080p with my SC 770 ACX

Your 770 ACX should be enough. I'm going to SLI my 780 ACX in December. Massive overkill for 1080p But I need to start doing 120fps again. It's so smooth.

That would be no good for me, I game at a desk! Plus I'd only want one around 27-32" and until they get a minimum of 60hz I'm not gonna get one. Hopefully I can get a 120hz screen when/If they become available

Still not going to buy this COD game. Will be interesting to see soem screenshots though.

I think You can get 4k to run at 60FPs if you use DVI. I cant get my monitor to run 120/144Hz if I use HDMI.

why does it need so much RAM? the maps are the size of peanuts and the player count is woeful

i also find the inclusion of a 780 in the required specs quite funny. The spec list is prolly a little inflated to 'keep up appearances'

    Battlefield 4 minimum specs:
    Dual core CPU @2.4 GHz
    4 GB main system memory
    AMD 3870/Nvidia 8800GT
    512VRAM
    30+ GB of harddrive space
    Windows Vista

urgh, must be all dem fishes

That being said, i hope Megatextures is something picked up by Bethesda. it keeps its quality at distance, more or less. interesting to see how its used in COD though.

Megatextures increase load times, so we'll see how they fair i guess.

Remember COD:Ghosts will be using nextgen assets as appose to current gen assets
Which is why the extra ram is needed.

Yeah, those specs, especially when they are talking about SLI is for playing at 4K.

Was actually a bit disappointed (i know ) to find out i could run BF4 on Ultra settings at a decent 70-90fps. And that is just with Beta drivers.

at a distance, that is mostly true (my reference to Bethesda). However, there is no texture 'swapping' like the traditional method. the texture detail 10KM away has the same detail as 10cm away. by that i mean; up close it loses its prettiness

megatextures can run to a size of hundreds of thousands of pixels. traditional methods use ~4000 pixels for high quality assets which get used in the immediate area around the player. the quality drops off the further away the asset is and might end up with a 25x25 texture.

^granted, this is my understanding of the tech from years ago. they could have improved the algorithm to better facilitate a LOD

i thought this was a cross gen title too like BF4? which is why the disparity seems somewhat awkward. BF does a lot more with a lot lower requirements.

MEga texture offer uniqueness to the entire world since the artists pretty much draw directly onto the game world and not create a individual textures and repeat them.

Rage suffered some low res textures up close because they wanted to keep 60FPS on current gen consoles and I dotn think those are "mega textures" to begin with.

Well good ol' John Carmack invented the mega-textures and put it into RAGE, while up close it did lose its crispness, the overall smoothness of the game was insane! This actually surprises me though with Ghosts, it's using mega-textures yet requires such a high spec? They clearly don't know how to use mega-textures properly and I bet are using it on each individual object.

Virtual-textures are definitely the way to go (evolution of mega-textures), especially with the VRAM we have nowadays, but traditional methods are a huge waste of space and horrible.

OMG now this I didn't realise, apparently he's the lead engine programmer and engine creator of The Evil Within, now that's one game engine that will run buttery smooth and look amazing and have amazing AI!

I would download it since I do not have a Blu ray drive. Only takes about 2 hours if got 60Mbit. Plus its probably going to be a steam works game meaning it requires steam like previous COD games so the disc pretty much becomes redundant.

Well considering it's their first new engine in ages, I wouldn't be surprised if their coders are out of touch with newer methods.

Either way the change is welcome. Games actually requiring our PCs to actually work again!

    I don't even had a dvd drive

I'll be sticking to DD for PC games anyway.

Where in the article did they state that the game uses mega/virtual texturing, or anything similar?
Most likely they just use bigger versions of the original textures, like in some better console conversions.

Although there are some very good reasons to use virtual textures, especially for terrain.
Performance, variety and so on, like how it was used in Battlefield 3&4 (terrain texture splatting into virtual texture.)
