Crytek Admits Microsoft Had To Rewrite Xbox One Code To Run Software

Crytek Admits Microsoft Had To Rewrite Xbox One Code To Run Software

The Xbox One hasn't been on the receiving end of positive press the way the Detroit Lions haven't been on the receiving end of a win since Barry Sanders wasn't a victim of retirement. Well, more less-than-savory news has emerged for the Xbox One regarding Crytek's Ryse: Son of Rome... according to the developers they didn't really showcase the game the way it should have been and that's because the Xbox One wasn't necessarily designed for it. In a way, it goes hand-in-hand with the reliability rumors that have recently surfaced, which compliment other news such as games being downgraded from 1080p to 900p.

Crytek admits to a fault that we were all pretty much aware of: Ryse has a stronger focus on visuals over gameplay.

According to MMGN, Crytek producer Michael Read told them...
"When we came into E3, we didn’t have a lot of our combat systems ready," ... "Admittedly we were focused more on the visual tech and the quality of what we were trying to deliver overall, and unfortunately there were certain things that people looked at, and especially when you haven’t really had a hands-on with it, you don’t really get the same sort of experience that we envisioned."
Read's comments are a follow-up to what he recently mentioned to Gaming Bolt, where he tried defending Ryse from being just a QTE-fest where players were basically ho-humming through soldier clones and only doing cool stuff because it was practically a playable cinematic sequence. Read was quick to state that the game is no longer just a QTE-fest and that Rysehas risen above David Cagism.

Crytek is now fully committed to making Ryse an actual game, a full-fledged game, a game they're proud to showoff. MMGN admits that at E3 the game wasn't much of a game but a button-synchronized interactive movie version of Zack Snyder's 300, minus the beautiful naked women and stylishly choreographed fighting.

Read goes on to say that they've refined the combat in Ryse and that the parts of the game that should shine, will shine because the team and Microsoft have been working to get the Xbox One up to par...
"We were wanting to show more depth of where the combat’s at, and more of how the combat system works. I think the multiplayer experience does a pretty good job of that."

"I don’t want to create a sob story here, but when you’re dealing with next-gen hardware -- I mean, seven years is an extended period, the technology has evolved a lot from the Xbox 360,"

"Microsoft has had to rewrite a lot of their code for the Xbox itself to be able to run this sort of software. So we’re still working on that, and it’s a mutual collaboration: we’re helping them try to decipher those pipelines."
That last part is frightening. Why would you have to rewrite a lot of code to get the Xbox to run video games? Isn't that what it was designed for?

I always suspected that the Xbox One was a home entertainment console and not an actual game console, but in a way, Read confirms this. This would also explain why so many of theXbox One games had to run on PCs instead of actual XB1 hardware and it also explains why even low-level games like Lococycle weren't capable of running on the Xbox One at E3.

If the game console was designed first and foremost as a television set top box for sports and watching TV on your TV, as well as working as a copyright enforcer for the MPAA, it would explain why so many of the game features are about as lacking as a 100-pound man-nerd trying to please a big beautiful woman: there's just not enough meat on the stick. In a way, Crytek and Microsoft are trying to beef up the Xbox One by giving it software Viagra, hoping it can compete with a very masculine and well endowed PS4.

Nevertheless, Michael Read chalks up the E3 Ryse experience as a slight mishap on the way the game was showcased, saying...
"The trouble is that sometimes [showing it early] can take away from what we can potentially do in the game, and showing hands-on, this is what the people see. I don’t think we showed it in the best possible way."
No, no... Michael it's okay. Some games are QTE-fest... just live it up and embrace it the way Capcom did with Resident Evil 6... we all saw how that turned out.

I guess this is why each game has its own graphics drivers, everyone's writing directly to the metal right now.

All great projects run into stumbling blocks along the way. MS is doing something that has never been done before. Of course there are going to be roadblocks to overcome. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. By combining games, TV, Kinect and integrating them to all work in harmony is a feat, to say the least.

MS went out on a limb with the One. They're going to stumble along the way but you're going to see a ton of non-gamers end up with the One. Honestly, MS is going down a different road than Sony. They don't want to stray too far in the beginning because the One is such a departure from the norm. By the end of this generation, Sony won't be a direct competitor of MS.

Looking ahead, I think that they best way for gamers to go will be with Steambox. Having a system like that with tons more games than either MS or Sony and games that are nowhere to be found on any console. Steambox/PC exclusives will outnumber consoles exclusives tenfold.

Seems to confirm the rumors of MS tools being behind. Could also be the reason it's not native 1080p.

They seem to be on the right track with the games and the great features. They started out rocky but are looking pretty good right now.

That'[s hilarious. xb1 is looking better than the competition IMO. Better launch line up, better console features on day one and dedicated servers. Yea, that's wii-u all the way...lol

I like the fact that consoles also have media capability, I was excited when I heard the rumors of it, but I think MS went about it all wrong, they should of kept the gaming first and media second...I also wish they hadn't made having a cable receiver necessary to use the TV functionality of it, before we knew anything of the next gen consoles I was hoping that they both would have the capability of being a DVR receiver that worked with the various services using CableCARD's or something to that extent, that right there for me would of been a huge selling point! Nothing pisses me off more than throwing $10-15/mo to Verizon for a underpowered receiver for my TV that I will never own, I have had their service for 5 years now, so for just one regular HD box (which I have a total of 2 as well as a DVR which is $15/mo) I have paid them $600 over the past 5 years to have the honor of BORROWING their $#@!ty hardware...so between all my receivers that I rent I have wasted about $2100 over the past 5 years...that would have easily paid for both consoles and a $#@! ton of games!

Maybe. Then again you could see a ton of non-gamers with smart TVs that don't need the X1.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

They don't want gaming first anymore. At best gaming will be 50/50 but I suspect that media will be at least 60% if not more.

I seriously doubt that, dude. But let's say you are right.....then why would any of us care about Xbox anymore? Nah....I still think MS is targeting gamers first. God....I hope so.

True, but MS will offer a one stop shop for everything. TV's can't and will never play discs and TV manufacturers won't go after exclusive services like the console manufacturers will.

I think we already see it. By MS doing what they're doing they are not putting gaming first. Everyone around here says it already.

Why would anyone around HERE care about it? Can't answer that. I think MS is looking at a different target audience though.

What the hell MS. You seemed to be working like your planned release was 2017. How can you be so behind when you are actually a SOFTWARE company?!

I guess it won't matter if they get everything working by release though

That is why they need to restructure and refocus, I think the whole XB1 reveal was a huge slap in the face to them and that is why they are going crazy right trying to fix what was broken. I don't mind TV services being on consoles, I WANT them to have TV services on them, but they needed to realize who their bread & butter are and I think the reveal kinda did that for them, just look at what has gone down since that happened!

I just think they went too far to fast and it backfired. They are still on the same track, they're just slowing the train substantially.

Those "exclusive services" had better kick some serious ass for folks to be willing to lay down $500 for them. Certainly don't need a X1 or PS4 to "play discs" either. If this is MS' target audience then there is some major competition already in place.

Because I have friends who are loyal MS supporters and it saddens me to think MS is now putting them second to a hypothetical audience they have yet to even explore- too many people have been alienated by this new shift in developmental policy- just my opinion

Even tho im not getting an xbone saying its another wii u is talking reckless and being disingenuous ..Wii U wishes it could run battlefield 4 with 64 players @ 60fps and Forza 5 1080p @ 60fps if your going to hate on the xbone bring facts like its more expensive than the ps4 when the ps4 is a more powerful system

They probably had to re-write the game code when Microsoft upgraded the Graphics drivers back in July.

Are you being deliberately difficult? There is nothing out there that points to it being "better" than the competition, especially at a $100 USD greater price point. Never mind the fact that it is demonstrably the weaker machine and has had a negative PR $#@!storm since it's unveiling. For good reason.

It's also quite clear they've had lots of development problems on Xbox One development that haven't existed on PS4.

Yes, it has Titanfall. I will grant you that (which is where all its awards come from) but that is a timed exclusive and is also releasing on Windows and 360. As such, I'm dubious it will reach the same heights of innovation than if it had targeted PC\next gen exclusively.

Regardless, I'm still personally more interested in BF4 and Shadowfall than Titanfall. I have little delusions that BF4 will be clearly superior on PS4 and PC than on Xbox One.

"Microsoft has had to rewrite a lot of their code for the Xbox itself to be able to run this sort of software. So we’re still working on that, and it’s a mutual collaboration: we’re helping them try to decipher those pipelines."
coming along nicely that mutual collaboration then.

makes me wonder how such an underpowered machine has the best upcoming games and winning so many awards... hats off to MS.
