Damn that overclockers site and their inaccurate specs.
I bought a PSU from them a few years ago (2006/7) and it didn't have any dimensions on it and it being ATX you would assume is the same size as the rest. Nope, it didn't fit properly in my case. Had to send it back if they added the size specs I would have known it will not fit becuas eI would have measured it which I said in my complaint.

I wouldnt worry about the drive being SATA 2 too much its Unlikely a mechanical drive being SATA 3 is going to be much if at all faster than one that is SATA 2 just because it is SATA 3. The main limiting factor is the mechanical moving parts.

So looks like 1TB is still the max for a PS4. Why didn't Sony allow for 15mm drives especially when games have to be installed to the drive even if you have the disc version?

That is one reason I double verify specs on stuff like that, it is all too often that I come across sites saying one thing when it is really another. We will be limited to 1TB drives for now, but there will be larger ones available later on...I am more worried that Seagate won't have their new hybrid drive out in time for the PS4, they have a 1TB drive with 32GB SSHD coming out, but it keeps getting delayed! Might have to get the 1TB/8GB SSHD until that one comes out...

I can finally use the 1tb I bought for the ps3 but didn't fit the bracket (currently on a full 750gb Thanks to ps+ )

You can see the tallness of the 1TB (left). 120gb with bracket attached (right)

This seems to be the best Seagate has to offer right now in terms of storage: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-...dp_ob_title_ce It's 9mm 1TB hybrid drive with 6Gb/s Sata and 64MB of Flash memory. Cost at Amazon is $107.42US. The smaller 500GB model however is much faster, it's 7200rpm not 5400rpm, it has higher cache, faster peak transfer rates.

I really wish the PS4 supported external HDD's and I wonder why they don't support external HDD's. It makes no sense to me. I also hope that you can swap HDD's without having to reformat it. I never understood why the PS3 had to reformat a HDD even though it was reformatted when it was installed.

WRONG, a game can still REQUIRE You to install game components in order to play the game, FULL GAME INSTALLS aren't mandatory but what you don't understand is You may have to still install some components of a game to HDD in order for it to play efficiently etc.

just like some PS3 games REQUIRE you to install some game components to HDD, they ask you or they install in the background etc.

I'm heaps happy I was right about the PS4 having a universal Caddy... 12.5mm and 15mm HDD's will fit nice and easy as the SATA connector is flush with the bottom, means only the height is the factor here and there's plenty of height in the caddy.

PS4 stock HDD is a 5400rpm HGST (formerly Hitachi)

And it's been tested and confirmed that the PS4 HDD bay supports up to 12.5mm drives so 15mm is officially out.

I upgraded my PS3 HDD to a 7200rpm 1TB HGST HDD earlier in the year, very reliable brand.

What people have to remember is the PS4 has 8GB of memory, you will more than likely seen absolutely no performance enhancements using a 7200rpm HDD or a 5400rpm SSHD drive, you may see a slight performance increase with a Solid State Drive but with the RAM being significantly boosted this gen loading speeds aren't a factor this gen as everything will be loaded at less than SATA 1 speeds.

PS3 had a capped data bottleneck so the rpm of the disk made a slight improvement if you had say a higher rotating drive like a 7200rpm over the stock 5400rpm drive. Faster RPM and larger cache mean faster access times.

Initial installs will take a little time sure but with the PS4 holding your games in a sleep state you're pretty much always ready to go regardless of your HDD spec.

Solid State is still way too expensive but will be useful in the future.

So at the moment the full capacity of the PS4 HDD is 1.5TB at 12.5mm

Get ordering your HDDs now people !!!

IF the SATA controller was the bottleneck on PS3 then it wouldn't have been possible for faster drives to make games install any faster. Todays 7200RPM drives are just about saturating SATA 1 controllers.

I was trying to refer to the faster drives having faster seek times e.g. I get a 20% boost in loading times using a 7200rpm drive on PS3 and installs are much faster than the slow stock HDD.

There's no way PS3 or PS4 can reach the full bandwidth of data throughput for the HDD because the data throughout is capped on the PS3 Motherboard at much lower than SATA 1 speeds, that plus lower RAM combined and many applications trying to use a slow HDD for read/write access at the same time has an effect on performance, that is why like I said the faster read/write times on a 7200rpm drive is what boosted speed.

I've heard PS4 data throughout is around 80-100mbps so around 3x the speed for blu-Ray and just under SATA 1 max throughput speeds
So like I said before it's not the SATA 1 speeds that's the problem it's the HDD access speeds RPM that matters !!

Speeds will matter less on PS4 as it has more RAM available for important data cycles.

Personally I'm going to install a 1TB HGST 7200rpm SATA 3 with 64mb cache on my PS4 it's exactly the same one that's in my PS3 right now.

Yeah, that is the one I currently have my eye on if the new 1TB/32GB model doesn't come out, worse case I can always move that one to my laptop once better model comes out!

Yeah, that 1TB is 12.5mm tall, while the PS3 only supports 9mm tall HDD - That said it would fit in the PS4 (which is what this thread is about.)

When using the term Size in reference to HDD's you're typically referring to it's Storage Capacity not it's physical dimensions.
