Super Smash Bros. screenshot teases Xerneas

The latest screenshot from the upcoming Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. teased the inclusion of Pokémon X and Y's Xerneas.

The screenshot was posted on the official Super Smash Bros. site and featured Pikachu in the foreground while Xerneas was looking off towards the distance in the background.

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai took this screenshot during development and also posted it to the Super Smash Bros. Series community in Miiverse. What could he be hinting at here?

Whether or not Xerneas will show up as a playable character, assist or simply a background character is still a mystery, but we'll let you know if more information regarding its appearance in the game, and whether or not it will be joined by Yveltal, is revealed.

Super Smash Bros. is set for release in 2014 for 3DS and Wii U.

I was hoping they would reveal Chrom from the new Fire Emblem but this is still cool.

Yeah, I'm most excited for this game on Wii U. I've read about a lot of Nintendo characters they could add so I'm hoping they release a new trailer soon.

And I can't seem to post the screenshot from the article so you'll have to click the link.

There you go friend... But i agree, it's been too long for sure and i am hoping they go all out on this one and make it the total package and we get the best one until the next Ninetendo console comes out... So they just keep adding characters up to release time

It's because the outline in X and Y compliments the anime art style. The 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. will include a character outline you can tweak.

Cannot wait for this game. Love that they added Sonic, Mega Man and the villager.

Look forward to seeing more characters added.

Getting it on Wii U instead of 3DS.

Sonic is actually a recurring character but I can't really comment on him since I missed out on Brawl. Mega Man is probably the coolest addition so far.
