500GB - minus the OS, formatting, etc. Probably only going to get 350-400GB.

Is this a mandatory install. Or just a optional install. Is the 35gigs game data needed to play the game. Does anyone know??

Its mandatory, but you can start playing the game before it all installs.

It installs in a smart way, so you can go ahead and start playing.

Shocked would be if they were 25GB or less. I have been assuming they'd be 26GB+

I'd expect at least ~425GB if not more.

Would be around 488GB due to the usual 1024 vs 1000MB farce then minus reserved space for OS and other things.

I guess it is something we were expecting, since games are getting bigger and MS have moved to Blu-Ray

F34R, MS has a console for you. It's called the xbox 360

The Blu-ray drive is too slow to keep up with the speeds next gen consoles require(I can't seem to grasp all the technical words at the moment lol)

PS4 let's you play while you install the game as well, right? As long as you can play the game as opposed to waiting then it's a welcome addition. Especially at those sizes. :P

lol. I wouldn't see how it's too slow... it's not the one from the PS3 for next gen.

Using the NTFS file system, a 500GB drive gives you ~465GB formatted capacity. I then gave a very liberal 40GB for the OS/reserved space, resulting in ~425gb available to the user.

My guestimate isn't too far off then.

The installs might be to speed up the OS.

And people said blu-ray wasn't needed! Now, before everyone has a heart-attack, you have to concede the fact that if blu-ray (or a similar alternative) wasn't to be introduced last gen, it would be introduced this gen and just imagine how much it would cost.

It would probably be cheaper as HD-DVD would've won.

i think that by the time that could happen, they (Sony/MS) will allow external drives to be used to store downloads/installs.
