PS4 Games don't install, they cache! (Also PSN Store news)

Pretty awesome news, think the standard 500GB HDD might be enough afterall.

Also the PSN store on PS4 will be different to what is on PS3.

Yeah, I still prefer the look and performance of the old PlayStation Store.

I imagine you can also fully install the games you want to. And you definitely should install those you play most often. Caching is good but if you play a lot of different games your HDD won't last too long.

Well the store had to be changed for a number of reasons.

    1. The new store is HTML 5, so better with media functionality.
    2. It was broken in some countries (pages/downloads wouldn't work) so likely instead of rolling it out to just some they decided everyone should be on the same layout.

Caching is temporary data on the HDD.
Think GTAV, that game is an install.
Now look at Uncharted or God of War they cache.
You don't notice the install going on in the back and when you exit nothing remains of it.
This was used for these games to remove ingame load times.

I know exactly what caching is. I am saying that if PS4 games cache their data every time you play them, it's not good for the life span of you HDD. Better to install frequently played games so it's only reading and not constantly writing, especially if you're gonna use an SSD

And this is not quite the same as Uncharted or GOW.

It isn't clear about the caching... If it's doing it in the background, meaning not having to wait for a 1GB install, etc., then this is awesome info.

Meaning, I put the disc in, and start playing, and it's caching data as I'm playing. Never had to wait for an install, etc. That will be a HUGE bonus. HUGE.

PS Store. Doesn't matter if they say it's going to be changed. It better be changed for the good.

I thought i'd seen this already confirmed but cannot seem to find it. (Might have been twitter)

Did find this which semi confirms it.

Shuhei Yoshida: Yes! So it's already been done. Like the PS Plus service actually does it, where it's downloaded but it doesn't install. So it's kind of half-baked. We wanted to make it so people don't have to wait for anything. If you have one hour of your time, you want to spend one hour playing games, and that's our goal.

They don't cache the entire game (~50GB) every time you play. Which is what Yoshida is saying the PS4 will do. And you can draw those conclusions from the box details too

I don't think it does install the entire game, only the parts you are playing at the time which is why Shuhei said "caching data" not "caching the game".

Admittedly I could be wrong though but it is where I had thought this would play into it.

    Otherwise, why bother?

    Found the link

Sony's Neil Brown told Develop attendees today that the same technology which allows PS4 to play a game as it's downloading from the internet will also allow the PS4 to play a game while it's being installed from a disc.

"A similar system also works on Blu-ray, chunks are automatically copied to the hard drive in the background," said Brown. "This means that after the first few minutes your game can rely on having faster read speeds from the hard drive."

Brown said that this "provides a better experience for players" because it will be "a completely background process".

He added, "They don't have to wait for anything to install before playing the game. The game will launch as soon as the disc has been put in the drive."

this was already somewhat confirmed. if you can play a game before it installs through PSN then surely they can do the same with the disc.

i honestly would rather they installed...i hope we get an option to install if we want to. there has to be some sort of a performance hit when playing a game. i highly doubt that you'd be installing 10GB of cache each time you play the game. maybe it does it while it's playing? possible but complicated.

oh yea i knew about that but what i really meant to say is that i hope this isn't what the full install feature used to be...like we have two options now instead of one. but it makes sense though, if they let you install, they want to keep the game performance consistent with others and more importantly, it will help with the OS too because their focus is to play the games FAST.

    so caching makes sense.

you're right because the current ps3 store $#@!ing blows....and when they say cache do they mean "to store in advance" so it lessens load times?

Do we know for sure that the cache is temporary? I haven't seen that said by Sony. It seems they're just emphasizing that it happens in the background.

My guess is that it will stay resident on the HD until you run out of space due to other game cache installs and downloads. It just means you never have to directly mange the storage.

You're probably right. It would make most sense, anyway. And one or two things aside, Sony are taking the sensible option with the PS4

cache is not a problem. Considering the PC is always working constantly in that regard and I have yet to have a fried HDD because of it.

Will users who are downloading games digitally benefit from this or is this strictly for those who are staying with regular retail games?

I'd rather install the game if possible, that's gonna destroy an SSD in no time if you play many different games.

    EDIT: ^^ lol nevermind

Does anyone know if this would apply to digital downloads in any way? I guess it wouldn't unless it downloaded the game in chunks.
