Hmm, apparently there is a license fee for mp3's as well, if this site is legitimate.

If they are worried about license fees to use MP3s, DLNA, etc. then they should just put a license file in the PS Store that allows us the option to purchase the license...I would gladly pony up a few bucks to be able to play MP3s and have my DLNA ability back!

Wait, so does that mean they'll have to pay the fee(s) if they want to patch it in? Maybe why they got the cost down while having the hw in there. Interesting.

Typically when you buy hardware (say a cd player) that can also read mp3's, the license cost is fit into the final price you pay.

So logically, if sony enabled mp3 payback, they would have to pay for every device it is enabled on, so all ps4's.

This stuff will be patched of course, I don't think it's a big deal anyway. I don't use the Media Server functionality on my PS3 anymore with the advent of things like Netflix.

There I was thinking we may get MKV support. How naive I was. This $#@! is basic.

It can play anything, but they have decided not to let it. It's decisions like these that rile up hackers.
PS3 is a superb media center and there is no reason the PS4 can't be!!!
I mean i understand that Sony wants to push their own services but no dlna, no mp3, no avi/mp4 playback thats ridicoulous, that would be a huge setback for everyone

They would have needed to license AAC, can't see why they would do that and not mp3.

Maybe maybe not. That's a classic CSR line so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Knowing Shu though, I know he will genuinely try and will most likely give it a good consideration/discussion among the team.

The outcome itself is not guaranteed though.

Going to Dev team? Y'all knew damn well people still use MP3's. I hope nobody is buying the bull$#@! they're selling. But in the grand scheme, I guess it is a good thing they are at least acknowledging the $#@!-up. I doubt it does anything to remedy the situation though. Talk about Sony throwing a slick curve ball.

I think the PlayStation guys like Shuhei were hoping for this backlash So they have a reason to tell music division the customer said "$#@! Off".

I remember watching a video with that heathen Howard Stringer years ago where he said in a BBC interview that his biggest challenges were unifying the organisation. Where the Sony Music and Sony Pictures Predominantly Headquartered in the US, who are basically the typical movie and music producers from traditional BMG and Paramount/Tristar from pre sony acquisition. I'm sure they are at the forefront of RIAA and MPAA cartels.

The top execs from MUSIC and PICTURES have grown a superiority complex, and often display disdain for the gaming side. And are opposed to things like ps3 functionality such as mp3 players and Video playback in the PS3. Infact they were the main drivers behind CINAVIA implementation and the lack of MKV.

Sony are traditionally "very hands off" with these divisions to foster their unique corporate identity. Unfortunately one of the reasons why, despite such a rich back catalogue and technical prowess, Sony did not launch an iTunes killer when they had the chance in 2001ish.

Kaz's ONE SONY strategy is definitely aimed at that future where Sony leverage ALL parts to deliver the ultimate in content and services. But unfortunately concessions had to be made, I'm sure the gaming div resisted because they know it's business suicide, but for the purposes of unity and demonstration of commitment to the project, the board gave into Pictures and Music divisions requests.

Maybe they think the PS4 will be the content services Trojan horse like bluray was with PS3. But this blocking of MP3/music playback is a restriction NOT A FEATURE or selling point for the system, There is ZERO benefit to me as an end USER, Unless they are going to pipe 50,000,000 LOSSLESS @ 7.1 audio songs into my ear canal for £10 a year. Or bundle this subscription with their top end headphones for those that give a $#@!. £60 a year is ridiculous.

I hope this "feedback" puts the money grubbing movie and music execs in their $#@!ing place.
